'Paying For It' Without Regret: An Intriguing Graphic Memoir Of Prostitution

It's not that getting dumped by his girlfriend soured Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown on the notion of romantic love, exactly. Because to sour on something, one would have to, at some point, feel strongly about it. And given the facts on evidence in Brown's latest autobiographical comic, the guy's not much for strong emotion. No, the Chester Brown we glimpse through the tiny black and white panels the artist arranges with such exacting precision is a creature of intellect. His approach to sex, in the wake of his girlfriend's rejection, is one of cool logic, dispassionate conclusions ? and some very literal cost-to-benefit ratios.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say "price-to-benefit" ratios, as Paying For It is a memoir of Brown's experiences with prostitutes over the course of the last 14 years. There are a great many of these tristes, each one making up a separate chapter. Brown alternates these explicit but entirely unerotic depictions of sex with scenes of himself in conversation with his cartoonist friends about his prostitution habit.

Brown believes that prostitution is a logical and healthy choice for him, and the women he engages, to make. His friends disagree, for a host of reasons. Paying For It is, at its cool, affectless heart, an argument for a deeply unpopular position, and as such it seems destined to become one of the most controversial memoirs of the year, graphic or otherwise.

But even when Brown is lecturing his friends (and thus the reader) on the connection between 12^th century troubadours and the fallacy of romantic love, Paying For It intrigues. It's never less than absorbing to note the way an excellent and deeply thoughtful cartoonist like Brown frames his assertions and employs his skill at visual storytelling to argue his point.

Because again and again, a puzzling but doubtlessly intentional tension arises between Brown's text and his imagery. Consider, for example, his stated aim to depict the many women he's paid to have sex with him as accurately as possible, using as much of their own words as he can recall from his notes. Yet, to protect their identities, he changes their names, hair color and ? in his most unsettling and fascinating choice ? he depicts them with their heads turned away from the reader. This, of course, cannot help but reduce these very different women, and their stories, to a series of literally faceless, interchangeable objects. Brown knows this, just as he knows that by continually choosing to depict the sex as he does ? so that we suddenly find ourselves at a far remove, gazing down at two tiny copulating figures suspended in inky blackness ? he's causing us to view the sex as clinical, joyless and repetitive.

There's also the way Brown depicts himself ? an po-faced creature with cadaverous cheekbones and a mouth like a Hangman blank. When a friend suggests that prostitution should be regulated to ensure that the women get regular medical treatment, Brown's reaction registers not on his impassive face but in a thought balloon, which roils into a violent thunderstorm of libertarian outrage.

Inside his tiny, cramped panels, Brown asks questions, challenges assumptions and interrogates long-held cultural, sexual and political positions without ever seeming like a mere contrarian. But a lengthy prose afterword, in which Brown tackles various anti-prostitution arguments by noting that they are founded on sweeping assertions that do not hold true in all cases, is more didactic ? and less engaging.

Are his arguments successful? That will depend on the reader, of course. But as a demonstration of the limitless narrative potential of the comics medium, its ability to tackle some of the most difficult and loaded questions of our time, Paying For It delivers. In the end, however, I found myself more concerned with how, and not if, Brown made the case he set out make.

Samuel Goldwyn Films Acquires 'Sacrifice' (Cannes)

CANNES -- Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Chen Kaige?s Sacrifice, an action drama about an orphan who is raised to avenge the death of his family.

The film, which was No. 1 at the Chinese box office for more than two weeks when it opened in December and went on to gross more than $30 million, stars Ge You and Wang Xue Qi and is based on Orphan of Zhao by Ji Jun-Xiang, which is set during the Yuan Dynasty. It was produced by Chen Hong and Qin Hong.

Goldwyn will release the film, which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival and is screening at the Cannes Market, later this year.

Peter Goldwyn, vp, acquisitions, negotiated the deal with Gary Hamilton and Lina Marrone from Arclight Films? specialty Asian label entitled Easternlight Films, headed by Ying Ye Best.

?I was completely mesmerized by this film ? the action, drama and setting were captivating. It is beautifully directed by Chen Kaige with extraordinary performances by Ge You and Wang Xue Oi.? As soon as I watched it, I knew we had to have it,? Goldwyn said.

Back in 2005, Saturday Night Live's relationship with the Internet changed forever when one of its short skits landed online. It was a music video about two guys catching a matinee showing of the first Chronicles of Narnia movie ? in short, a "Lazy Sunday."

SNL had mostly been appreciated via the airwaves, but it was now getting massive play on the Web. Pulling in more than 7 million views, "Lazy Sunday" was an immediate viral sensation on YouTube ? and, remember, this was back when YouTube didn't produce one of those every week.

The song was written by SNL cast member Andy Samberg (who appears in the video with former cast member Chris Parnell) and SNL writers Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Together, they're the comedy trio known as The Lonely Island, and their songs and music videos since "Lazy Sunday" have earned them an Emmy award and a Grammy nomination. Now, they have a new album called Turtleneck & Chain.

Andy Samberg calls this song 'an anthem for all the jerky little kids out there who scream at their moms.'

The three first met as teenagers in Berkeley, Calif. Samberg tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Liane Hansen that they had one specific thing in common: "We all have parents from New York," he says. "We all sort of attribute our immediate kinship to sarcastic parents."

When they graduated from college, Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone decided to move to Los Angeles, where they started making comedy videos together and posting them online. In the process, they bonded over a shared love of some comedy greats: SNL forebears like Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and Mike Myers, as well as luminaries such as Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, the Monty Python troupe and the Marx Brothers.

"We definitely went through a Marx Brothers phase when we were living in L.A.," Samberg says. "We watched a bunch of old Marx Brothers movies and decided that every time we told a joke that all three appreciated, we would shake each other's hands and go, 'Very nice! Thank you! Congratulations!' "

The members of The Lonely Island agree that they've succeeded as a team in part because they almost always find the same things funny ? and when they don't, they keep it from getting in the way.

"In general, if one person doesn't get it and is like, 'I don't know why you guys think that's so funny,' they just need to leave the room and let the other two keep pushing forward with it, rather than naysaying until it slows down," Schaffer says.

"There's no time in comedy for naysaying," Samberg adds.

Since the trio often crafts jokes by reducing an idea to the absurd, there's another important factor to their success: never taking themselves too seriously.

"I think self-deprecation is a big part of our humor," Taccone says. "I still occasionally die laughing just thinking that my name is Jorma. Like, that's really funny."

Behind Apple?s Blowout Quarter: iPhones, MacBooks And China

It is difficult to understate what a run Apple is on right now. Look no further than the blowout earnings Apple reported today for its second fiscal quarter ended in March. Revenues were up revenues up 83 percent to $24.7 billion, and profits grew even faster, up 95 percent to $6 billion. Growth was strong across the board (with the exception of iPad sales which suffered from supply constraints and built up "the mother of all backlogs," according to CFO Peter Oppenheimer). But if you dive into the numbers, you will see that three areas drove the overall growth more than any others: iPhones, MacBooks and China. The iPhone now makes up half of Apple's revenues, or $12.3 billion in the quarter. Sales grew 126 percent in dollar terms, with unit sales up 113 percent. In the U.S. alone, iPhone sales were up 155 percent. Bringing Verizon on board helped goose the numbers, but AT&T wasn't exactly complaining either.

International Box Office: Paramount's 'Thor' Claims No. 1 With Stellar $83 Million Opening

Sunday is May Day, and summer is already in second gear on the foreign theatrical circuit.

Paramount's Thor decisively claimed the weekend's No. 1 box office spot on the foreign theatrical circuit with a gross of $83 million -- 2011's biggest opening weekend tally by more than $25 million -- from some 7,250 locations in 56 overseas markets.

Director Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of a Stan Lee comic book about an otherworldly renegade warrior defending planet Earth opened at No. 1 in the U.K. and Ireland ($9 million from 500 situations over five days), in France ($8.1 million from 579 locales), South Korea ($5.7 million from 513 spots), Italy ($5.5 million from 455 locations) and Spain ($5 million from 377 situations).

Thor also recorded first-place openings in several smaller markets, including Taiwan ($2.1 million from 58 sites for a per-screen average of $36,206), Singapore and the Philippines. In Vietnam, the opener yielded $308,000 from 19 sites, which Paramount said was a three-day debut record for the market.

So far, Thor has tallied an overall foreign gross of $93 million. The Marvel Entertainment outing opened last round in Australia, where this time it drew a second-weekend tally of $3.3 million from 226 locations, a 42% from the opener, hoisting the Down Under cume to $13.1 million.

Universal's Fast Five, which like Thor opened overseas last weekend (in the U.K., Australia, South Korea and New Zealand), drew $45.3 million this time from 3,211 playdates in 14 territories, running up its early foreign gross total to $81.4 million.

Fast Five ranked No. 2 on the weekend overseas; in the U.S. and Canada it opened at No. 1 on the weekend. Worldwide, the fifth sequel in the turbocharged car action franchise has grossed $128.9 million.

The action title starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker grabbed No. 1 slots in each of its 10 new overseas markets, with Russia leading the pack with $11.5 million drawn from 712 sites. Other No. 1 debuts included Germany ($10.2 million from 633 spots), Austria ($1.4 million from 82 situations) and Turkey ($900,000 from 175 venues, Universal's biggest opening weekend in the market ever).

The biggest Fast Five holdover was Australia, where it commanded the No. 1 slot with $4.7 million from 230 sites, off 41% from the opening round. Down Under cume stands at 20.9 million. Thor is set to open in Finland and China by next weekend, while Fast Five will open in 45 markets this week, including France, Italy, Brazil and Mexico.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox's Rio, which had been the No. 1 box office champ overseas for the past three weekends, finished its fourth stanza in the weekend's No. 3 spot with $31.7 million 10,560 locations in 67 markets.

International cume for the family-oriented animation title stands at $263 million, more than two-and-a-half times its domestic gross total. Rio continues to thrive in No. 2 weekends France, Brazil and Mexico, with the France tally coming in at $4.9 million from 781 sites, an increase, said Fox, of 31% from the prior round. Rio has grossed a market total of nearly $36 million in Brazil so far.

Despite having no new overseas openings, Universal's Hop snared $5.7 million from 3,800 sites in 53 territories, lifting its foreign gross total to $58.4 million. The Easter bunny title blending animation with live action has five more markets to play over the next few months, said Universal.

Fox's Depression-era drama Water for Elephants picked up its box office pace offshore with a $4.7 million weekend at 1,851 screens in 23 markets. The Fox 2000 drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson opened at No. 4 in German with $1.9 million elicited from 411 situations. Foreign cume so far stands at 8.2 million.

A solid Italy opening plus steady holdover action in France drove the weekend tally of Summit International's thriller Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, to $4.5 million from about 1,525 screens in 36 territories and a $35 million offshore gross total to date.

Just Go With It, Sony's comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, pushed its overseas cume safely past the $100 million mark ($107.9 million) thanks to a $2.2 million weekend at 1,310 screens in 54 markets. Universal British-made road comedy Paul, with 34 markets still to play, bagged $2 million from 800 situations in 21 territories, lifting its overseas gross total to $49.2 million.

The biggest local-language title in France was La fille du Puisatier (The Well Digger's Daughter), actor-director-scenarist Daniel Auteuil's update of?Marcel Pagnol's 1940 romantic drama. The Pathe release nabbed the No. 3 market spot with $2.6 million drawn from 513 screens, off just 13% from its opening round.

Other international cumes: Sony's World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles, $118.1 million; Fox's Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, $44 million; Pathe's Le Film Titeuf, $10.9 million over four rounds in France only; Fox's Black Swan, $191.6 million; Universal's The Adjustment Bureau, $52.7 million; Fox's Dairy of a Wimpy Kid, $6.2 million; Universal's Scream 4, $2 million over 10 days in Spain only; and Fox's Gulliver's Travels, $187.1 million.

It is no secret that Intel has been late to the ARM-dominated mobile industry, but the chip giant is looking to get in to the fight in a pair of big initiatives. The first is getting Honeycomb to run on various Atom tablets that could see Windows and even MeeGo as possible boot options alongside Android. Intel had enough clout with Google to get the Honeycomb source code, which still has not been released to the AOSP. Expect to see tablets with this setup later this year.

The second is to get Android up and running on smartphones with Intel chips. While we have seen tech demos before, there has not been a commercial release for an Intel-powered smartphone yet. Intel is hoping to change that within the next 12 months. Intel said that testing on the carriers' networks was the biggest holdup at this point. [Intel via Engadet, The Register]

But don't overlook their emotional and psychological issues. These can be as debilitating as the disease itself and seriously affect treatment outcomes if not addressed.

Depression caused by chronic pain and frustration can derail an otherwise successful course of treatment.

When treating your cancer patients, strive to become a one stop shop for addressing not only their post chemotherapy peripheral neuropathy and other physical side effects from treatment, but also a great resource for supportive services and information that can provide a tremendous benefit to your cancer patients.

Help them address some of the serious obstacles to successful treatment that most health care professionals don't think about.

Patient Information Resources1

Make your office the one place your cancer patients know they can go to for current patient information and education about cancer treatment options, specific types of cancer, long and short term side effects of their chosen course of treatment. When preparing your patient information materials, include education on cancer diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, treatment side effects from chemotherapy or radiation and questions they should ask their doctors. Provide them with a list of local resources that are available to assist them with the challenges they face as a cancer patient.

Support for Lifestyle Changes

A cancer diagnosis can mean serious lifestyle changes for your cancer patients. Smokers will probably have to quit smoking; athletes will have to curtail some of their physical activity; patients who live alone may have to stay with family members while undergoing treatment. All of these changes can lead to serious emotional issues. Provide counseling to your cancer and post chemotherapy neuropathy patients on dealing with these lifestyle changes proactively. Provide tips on what they should expect and the best ways to handle these short term challenges.

Don't Be Afraid to Talk About Money

For cancer patients with no insurance or even less than adequate insurance, a cancer diagnosis can be especially devastating. They may forego necessary prescriptions or even skip appointments. When trying to pay for their cancer treatment, they may find it difficult to even pay for the most basic necessities of life. Become familiar with programs in your area that can assist your cancer patients with paying for medications, providing home health assistance, or even services that can help them with transportation to and from their health care providers.

Any assistance will help. Fighting cancer is hard enough without the added worry of financial issues. Just knowing that there are resources available to help might ward off the serious depression that can make recovery that much more difficult.

Keeping Track of Medical Information2

When a patient is undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or other treatment for cancer, they have mountains of information to keep track of. They need to monitor when to take their medication, how to take it, keep up with medical appointments, monitor their symptoms, and make note of any and all side effects their experience. They need to keep a written record of everything. Provide them with a record book or specific forms to make it easier for them to write everything down and keep it in one place. It will not only make it easier for your cancer patient to manage their medical information, it will make it much easier for you just having all their notes together in one place.

The Nation: Confronting Trump's Coded Racism

If there were any doubts about the racial animus driving Donald Trump's attacks on Barack Obama, the billionaire reality show star exposed himself with his latest conspiracy. On Monday night, Trump questioned how Obama could possibly have been admitted to Ivy League schools, since Trump "heard" Obama was a "terrible student." Trump told the AP that he was investigating the issue, whatever that means, just as he claims to have dispatched investigators to Hawaii in order to find the President's famous birth certificate.

"How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?" Trump said. "I'm thinking about it, I'm certainly looking into it. Let him show his records."

By charging that Obama was not admitted based on merit, Trump is suggesting that Obama was admitted because he is black.

In GOP politics, attacking racial minorities as the underachieving beneficiaries of affirmative action is a very old move. Sen. Jesse Helms produced the most notorious example, an ad against his black opponent, Harvey Grant, which blasted affirmative action for taking jobs from deserving white people and giving them to minorities. Even that dark salvo, however, was putatively linked to jobs and active policy debates. Trump is not so smooth. He is blatantly attacking Obama's teenage qualifications for college ? a topic so obscure, it was a non-issue in Obama's exhaustive, two-year-long presidential campaign. Coupled with the rage of the Birthers, Trump's adopted conspiracy crowd, the mogul looks more like he is auditioning for a talk radio gig than the presidency.

Still, racial dog whistles only work when a lot of people play along. Otherwise a coded attack ? aimed at the racists but clinging to deniability ? curdles into public, blatant racism. (That's bad in politics and business, so it would restrain even a business candidate like Trump.) So far, the press has been quite delicate when confronting Trump.

The editor-in-chief of CBS News, Dan Farber, sounded rather strained when explaining Trump's Ivy League attack:

"...how could a person from Mr. Obama's humble background and academic achievements get into Harvard? Trump's inference is that Mr. Obama is a cipher, cannot be trusted and is concealing a dark secret."

What is this dark, untrustworthy cipher-secret? I don't see Trump saying that the President of the United States is a cipher ? a zero or nonentity ? but rather that back in the day, Obama was not good enough to get into college without a racial boost.

Even respected liberal commentators have given Trump something of a pass for the racial tension animating Birtherism. Hendrik Hertzberg, the authoritative essayist, argues in this week's New Yorker that Trump's appeal to birtherism is "part of a larger pattern of rejection of reality" by Republicans, like denying the science of global warming, or believing that "contraception causes abortion."

I think that a loose relationship with the scientific method surely helps conspiracies spread, but Birtherism draws on passions that depart substantially from greenhouse gases. It is a putatively non-racial, vaguely constitutional way to challenge the legitimacy of the first black president and appeal to racists without sounding officially racist. Sure, there may be plenty of GOP tenets running counter to reality nowadays, yet none evoke the suppressed fury of the Birthers. They won't go away. They are an audience-in-waiting for any amplified race-baiter, from Lou Dobbs to unserious presidential candidates. Indeed, Politifact, the fact-checking site for politics, says its article about the issue, (with a link to the certification of live birth!), is the most read item that it has ever published.

I asked Hertzberg about his formulation, and while he wouldn't "exclude racist undertones," he said the attack is "more about identity." "Obama's erudition, his ivy-league-ness, his urbanity, his citizen-of-the-worldness, his foreign-sounding name, his respect for the authority of reason and science, his 'aristocratic' 'aloofness' (all of which I love, of course) are equally or more part of the package," Hertzberg proposed in an email.

The analysts who have directly called out Trump's race-baiting, to their credit, have tended to come more from the credentialed blogosphere or opinionated television. At the Daily Beast, Andrew Sullivan observes that Trump had thrown down "the affirmative action card to pump up the GOP base," and it's time to take stock: "We might as well concede it: these are racist smears." At Salon's War Room blog, Alex Pareene wrote a crisp lede in his story on the emergence of SATs on Trump's publicity tour: "Donald Trump added a blatantly race-baiting component to his already racially charged campaign against Barack Obama's Americanness this week.... " Over on cable, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell has been especially strong in calling out Trump, a fellow NBC star, noting that he has become a "hero" to racists. Fareed Zakaria, opting for truth over balance at CNN, flatly dispatched Trump's birther crusade as "shame[ful] coded racism."

Meanwhile, another CNN story topped the political blogosphere this week, (according to data from Memeorandum), under the bizarre headline, "CNN investigation: Obama born in U.S."

Does anyone, at any news organization, consider this news? Of course not. Launching another "investigation" into Obama's birthplace in 2011 and "reporting" the results is not really objective journalism. It is an overreaction to conspiracy theories, masquerading as fact-checking. Let's leave the politicized, air-quote investigations to Trump. The facts in this area have been established. The only thing left to do is call out the lies ? and the racism.

Updates: In New Hampshire on Wednesday, Donald Trump claimed credit for the White House release of Obama's "long form" birth certificate, and declared that the President should "get off his basketball court" and focus on gas prices. The dog whistles are getting less subtle.

While the New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg did not think race was the primary factor driving Trump's attacks, David Remnick, The New Yorker's editor-in-chief and the author of an accalimed book about Obama's background, published an unusually blunt critique of Trump's "race-baiting" on Wednesday afternoon. "What is there to say anymore about Donald Trump?," Remnick asks. "That he is an irrepressible j- - - - - - who thinks of himself as a sly fox? That he is a buffoon with bathroom fixtures of gold? Why bother, after so many decades? There is no insulting someone who lives in a self-reinforcing fantasy world." Remnick, a scrupulously measured writer, says we must face facts: "to do what Trump has done (and he is only the latest and loudest and most spectacularly hirsute) is a conscious form of race-baiting, of fear-mongering. And if that makes Donald Trump proud, then what does that say for him?" (Read the entire piece here.)

Finally, over at Jack and Jill Politics, a blog focused on black issues, Cheryl Contee responds to this article and analyzes Trump's "very savvy racism." "I've heard resentment over college affirmative action from even liberal friends," she writes, "it's a huge source of racial resentment."

As you may have have been able to discern from the multitude of leaks that have surfaced over the past few months, RIM is apparently getting set to debut a new touchscreen-equipped BlackBerry Bold at BlackBerry World next week. While still not completely official, that's now been all but confirmed by RIM itself, which briefly featured the teaser pictured above on its website before pulling it for reasons unknown. As you can see, RIM apparently couldn't help itself and promised that it will be a "bold step ahead," and it appears that the phone is unsurprisingly running BlackBerry 7, which until recently was better known as OS 6.1. Of course, that's hardly the only news we're expecting to hear at BlackBerry World, and you can be sure we'll be there to brave the puns and bring it all to you.

As the days grow warmer, employers who run roller coasters, water parks and hot dog stands are preparing for the summer season. They're seeking workers to fill jobs at or just above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Labor advocates say it's time for those workers to get a raise. They noted that when the minimum wage was last increased in July 2009, the cost of gasoline was about $2.50 a gallon. This summer, the pump price may well be twice that in many locations. Workers will also be spending more for their lunches because of higher food prices.

But the political outlook for a cost-of-living raise is bleak this year. With Republicans in control of the U.S. House, labor advocates are not expecting Congress to act.

States Wary Of Raising Minimum Wages

Instead, they have been focusing their lobbying efforts on state legislatures. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages set higher than the federal level. For example, in Oregon the wage is now $8.50 an hour.

Minimum wage supporters are hoping to prompt at least a few states to act. In Illinois, for example, some lawmakers have been pushing to raise the state minimum wage up to $10.65 in steps over four years. So far, they have not been successful. In fact, no state has voted to increase the minimum wage this year.

The problem is that with the unemployment rate still at 8.8 percent, elected officials don't want to do anything that might discourage job creation, especially for low-wage workers.

Business groups say a wage increase at this time would be a blow to workers because it would only discourage job creation. Government-mandated wage hikes "cause restaurant operators to make very difficult decisions to eliminate jobs, cut staff hours or increase prices," according to the National Restaurant Association, a trade group.

The Rise (Or Fall) Of The Minimum Wage

The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, to $7.25 an hour. In 1971, the minimum wage was $1.60. Adjusted for inflation, a worker today would have to make $8.83 an hour to have the same buying power, according to the Labor Department.

You Have To Have Money To Spend It

Labor advocates insist that thinking is wrong-headed. They argue that unless more workers get pay raises this year, a lot of families won't have money to spend. And, they say, that's exactly what the U.S. economy needs ? more consumer confidence and more spending. To stimulate the economy, lawmakers should insist that employers put more money into workers' wallets, the argument goes.

Political polls consistently show broad support for that viewpoint. "The average person knows the cost of things is going up," says Jen Kern, minimum wage campaign coordinator for the National Employment Law Project. "This is a critical part of recovery ? to help people have more money to spend."

Economists have been debating which of those competing views is correct ever since the federal minimum wage was first enacted in 1938. Some studies show raising the wage reduces the number of jobs, while others show that a modestly higher wage can stimulate spending without costing jobs.

In any case, while the debate continues in the United States, officials in other countries, especially in Asia, have come to a conclusion: Low-wage jobs need to pay more to head off social unrest. Workers are becoming angrier about this year's rising food and fuel prices. In China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, the governments are in the process of introducing or toughening their minimum wage laws. In Hong Kong, for example, the government is imposing a minimum wage for the first time on May 1 ? just in time for International Workers' Day.

Toshiba launches Regza AT300 into uncertain Honeycomb tablet market

Toshiba announced that its 10.1-inch Android 3.0 tablet will ship in Japan in June for $723 under the name "Regza AT300." But despite rosy long-term projections for Android tablets, early problems -- high cost requirements, an unstable Android 3.0, and Japanese component shortages -- some vendors are delaying or sticking with with Android 2.x, say industry reports.

The Regza AT300 was shown off at CES in January and then unveiled again later that month on a teaser web-site that added a few more details. The promising device replaces last year's half-baked Folio 100 Android 2.2 tablet.

Toshiba Regza AT300 Until now, the dual-core, Nvidia Tegra 2 based device was listed as the "Toshiba Tablet," without a final name, price, or destination. Now we have all three:? Toshiba has unveiled the 10.1-inch tablet as the Regza AT300, with final shipment in Japan in June for a price of 60,000 JPY (US$723). This is according to several sources, including a report on AkihabaraNews. Toshiba Japan also posted a Regza AT300 web-page, available here in a version that is at least partially translated into English.

There were no details about availability outside of Japan, but an April 19 report from Engadget revealed an April 13 U.S. trademark application for a Toshiba tablet computer under the name "Thrive." The story says the tablet had previously been tipped under the names Antares, and more recently, ANT.

Only a few new details on the Regza AT300 have surfaced that weren't already known, including the tablet's memory allotment (1GB RAM and 16GB flash) and the presence of SRS Premium Voice Pro audio technology. Toshiba is also hyping its DLNA-ready Regza Apps Connect software for sharing media with other Regza-branded consumer electronics devices including phones, TVs, and set-tops, as well as Toshiba's Dynabook laptops.?

As previously known, the AT300 -- pictured above in Toshiba's official portrait and at right in an AkihabaraNews photo -- appears to follow the standardized feature list dictated by Google for Honeycomb tablets. The specs are shared by pretty much all the other announced 10.1-inch tablets, including the Motorola Xoom, with few variations.

The AT300 runs a stock Android 3.0 release on a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor clocked at 1GHz. The tablet supports 720p HD video on the 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) capacitive touchscreen, says Toshiba.

The rear camera is a five-megapixel device with autofocus, while the front-facing camera offers two-megapixel resolution, says the company. The device provides 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and accelerometers. There are also ports for USB, mini-USB, and HDMI, as well as a headphone jack, says Toshiba. An SD slot is also said to be available.

The device still weighs in at 1.7 pounds (765 grams), and as before, battery life is listed at seven hours. We did not, however, see mention of one previously tipped feature: a swappable battery.

The Regza AT300 is arriving at a time of peril and potential, not to mention a whole lot of uncertainty for Android 3.0 tablets. Rosy long-term forecasts have been offered for Android tablets from many sources, with Gartner last week projecting that Android tablets would command 40 percent market share by 2015, up from 20 percent through 2011. The 2015 projections would place Android a fairly close second to iPad's 47 percent, according to a report in our sister publication eWEEK.

This week, Strategy Analytics followed up with a report suggesting that global tablet revenues will reach $49 billion by 2015, according to another report in eWEEK. This figure was said to exceed those of every consumer electronics category except TVs and PCs.

In the short term, however, the promise of Android tablets appears to have faded somewhat since Honeycomb and the flagship Motorola Xoom debuted in February. Recent reports suggest that the Xoom (pictured) has not sold anywhere close to expectations, with many reviewers and consumers balking at high prices and the unstable Android 3.0 software.

Google's Android chief Andy Rubin seemed to suggest as much when he told Bloomberg Businessweek in late March that Google would be indefinitely delaying the open source release of Android 3.0 code. Speaking of the Xoom, Rubin was quoted as saying, "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs."?

As summed up in a Mashable story yesterday, early reviews of the LG G-Slate (pictured) Honeycomb tablet available on T-Mobile have been mixed. Despite offering a lower price than the Xoom, some reviewers noted similar problems with a Honeycomb release that is still too rough around the edges.?

On April 15, Digitimes reported that major Taiwanese manufacturers have decided to postpone the launch of Honeycomb tablets due to slow sales of the Xoom, as well as the shortage of components caused by the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami.

In late March, Asus began taking pre-orders for its Eee Pad Transformer Honeycomb tablet (pictured), which can plug into a keyboard to act as a netbook. However, DigiTimes now says Asus will delay shipments until late April and May for the 16GB and 32GB version, respectively, which would suggest that flash memory is in short supply. The HTC Flyer meanwhile, is expected to ship on schedule in the second quarter, but volume shipments will be delayed beyond that, says the story.

Finally, a BetaNews story reports that a number of second-tier tablet vendors will continue to offer Android 2.x tablets for awhile rather than jump to Android 3.0. The vendors are not only waiting until the software matures, but also for the price of the required hardware components to drop.

The story quotes an executive from European vendor HannStar, which makes the Hannspree Tablet (pictured), as saying that its Honeycomb tablet will be delayed until at least the fourth quarter of this year.? The chief problem HannStar encountered was in meeting Google's high-end hardware requirements for Honeycomb without ending up with a high, Xoom-like price. The cost of the 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 display alone almost doubles the cost of the tablets, says the story.

HannStar is said to be planning a second Hannspree Android 2.2 tablet for shipment in May.

Five Not Very Good Ideas in Television

There are always bad ideas in television. There are always lessons that go unlearned. That's why the bulk of my job is focused on "failure analysis." Recently, a handful of bad ideas that I thought might be reconsidered have not been. In fact, they are heating up. So let's dip our toes in the milk of human dumbness.

1. Trying to reboot Two and a Half Men Without Charlie Sheen.

Say what you want about Sheen, but he?s right on this one. He was the show. The audience completely bought into his character, which made even the lamest of the better jokes work.

Is television a writer?s medium? You bet it is. But in Two and a Half Men, Sheen proved that when the writers get lazy, stumble or just aren?t that funny, an actor can make all the difference.

What Chuck Lorre?? who has every right to be offended by Sheen?s incendiary riffs on his character and talent ? needs to understand is that there?s not a whole lot of funny anywhere else in the show. And beyond the notion of an ill-advised reboot, which would be hard enough to do if an actor left for the movies or simply wasn?t re-upped, the Implosion of Charlie Sheen is pretty much world news. He did not go quietly. And no matter how weirdly insane the whole thing seems, Sheen has proved that he?s pretty damned funny when he?s uncaged ? in fact, far funnier than he?s ever been on the show. You can?t fill a void that big. It wouldn?t be fair to anyone you put in the role and would, sad to say, point out how weak the surrounding characters really are.

2. Giving Katie Couric a daytime talk show.

Let?s see ? ABC might give a $20 million deal to someone who failed to ignite an audience in the most high-profile chair in all of the news world? Really? Say what you will about her ?perky? days as a morning-show host, but that was a long time ago. A morning-show host needs to have no baggage, to be liked by all. In our partisan world, being the poster anchor for the CBS Evening News is going to get you branded, so part of that audience is out. Add to that the Sarah Palin memories. So you're already trying to rebuild a brand ? Couric ? who has already been judged by a chunk of the available audience.

And Couric hardly seems as chipper and chatty as she was back in the day. What people seem to want in a daytime host is Ellen or Oprah. Couric seems to have lost her charm as she?s had to outfit herself with armor against her detractors. The smile seems a little more pinched. And if you ever believed the sincerity, it seems a bit less second nature these days.

But maybe if ABC lands her, they?ll have her do something more? What, exactly, escapes the mind. If you let her do a news special or any kind of reporting, you back-slide on the character reinvention that?s needed to make her likable to everybody. So, what, she?s just going to have a talk show? That's it? For $20 million? Listen, ABC, there?s a reason that CBS passed. And though it might be impolitic to reach out to a competitor, somebody should call Leslie Moonves? cell phone for a 20-minute chat. It might save you a million dollars a minute.

3. Going forward with The Office, sans Steve Carell.

What happens if you combine going without Sheen in a reboot of his comedy and giving an expensive redo to Couric? You still come up way short of the egregious mistake that is The Office going on without Carell. Come on. Stop milking this thing. The sitcom has had a creatively rocky past two seasons and has mined pretty much all it can from the original premise of awkward moments in the workplace. Any more is just strip-mining, and that?s just bad for the environment (and your credibility). Knowing when to let go is hard. Mean people might imply that you should have let go two seasons ago. (Hi. Good to see you again.) Nicer people will say this season was completely unnecessary. There?s a very good chance that everyone will shake their heads in disapproval for next season?s comeback.

Could a revamp shake things up, creatively? Maybe, if it was done right. A celebrity replacement isn?t the answer. Retooling the concept entirely might be more effective. But there?s no reason to be the final season of Scrubs. Nobody needs to be that. Come on. The money?s been mined. Syndication is in place. Opt for dignity. Think about the legacy.

4. Rebooting Law & Order: Los Angeles.

Do you sense a trend here? Have you heard the old story about the guy responsible for undoing the tether that keeps the blimp grounded? Once it goes up ? ?and it can go up in a hurry ? ?if he holds on (and that?s instinctual), he needs to make a quick decision about letting go. Do it fast, and you survive, with some bruises. Think about it longer, and, well, it ends badly. If hanging on and ending badly, even embarrassingly, is the theme of the first three, then this is the opposite. What the hell is there to hang on to? Law & Order: Los Angeles was bad from the pilot forward. Junking it and changing roles and feeding it back to viewers is an idea that only ?Dick ?Print Me More Money? Wolf could love.

Yes, Wolf practically invented the idea that you can dump your lead actors and kick-start a flagging series with new blood, but he?s not Dr. Frankenstein. LOLA, as it known, was DOA. You can?t sew new heads on the characters and make it work. It?s a bad idea. But obviously, given the instances above, not an idea anyone in the industry has learned a lesson from.

5. Launching gender-specific channels.

Hello women of Poland. Prepare yourself for something uniquely, well, you. It?s called Blink! (from Viacom), and it will target you precisely because you?re female. After you decide to watch something only because it has women in it ? like Hot in Cleveland ? or because it caters to your ?lifestyle,? then women from all around Europe will also get Blink! as well. If you sign up now, you might get a T-shirt you can wear to yoga. The target audience for Blink! is women 16-49 (doesn?t that rule out the cast of Hot in Cleveland?), because everybody knows that women in that demographic like the same things. Why Blink!, ladies? Because OWN and Oxygen and Lifetime and the CW and, well, pretty much the vast majority of channels and shows on television is clearly not enough for you. Who doesn?t want more options?

While it might be true that women will watch certain programming and men another kind (hence All Things Oprah, Spike, ESPN, etc.), it certainly seems that the bases are already covered several times over for females.

And beyond that, isn?t it insulting?

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone: in the latest chapter of the Apple-Samsung dispute over their smartphones' resemblance, the latter company has just retaliated by filing lawsuits against Apple in three countries. Sammy's load of ammo include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, though we've yet to hear more details about these claims. Now we just sit back and enjoy the show -- popcorn, anyone?

Iceland Volcano Ash Pics Vindicate Airspace Shutdown

The most detailed visual study yet of volcanic ash from last year?s Icelandic eruption reveals just how sharp, abrasive and potentially dangerous the particles were.

After Eyjafjallaj?kull erupted in April 2010, sending volcanic plumes high into the atmosphere, officials closed Europe?s airspace for days because of the risk of ash scouring planes or being sucked into jet engines and shutting them down. ?Aviation authorities made the right decision,? says team leader Susan Stipp, a geoscientist at the University of Copenhagen.

Hours after the volcano began erupting, University of Iceland volcanologists Sigurdur G?slason and Helgi Alfredsson raced toward it to collect ash. They were the last ones to cross a bridge to safety before meltwater floods from atop Eyjafjallaj?kull washed the road away.

G?slason sent some of the fresh ash, along with another batch collected 12 days later, to Stipp, whose lab studies how natural particles flow in the environment. The scientists put the ash through a barrage of tests, like attaching a single particle to the tip of a tiny beam to measure changes in mass. Their results appear the week of April 25 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

As ash particles exit the volcano, volatile gases condense on them and coat them with salts including the elements chlorine, fluorine and arsenic. Stipp and her colleagues dunked the ash particles in water, as might happen in a flood, and watched as tiny bits of salt washed away. In one case, 35 millionths of a millionth of a gram vanished within 15 seconds. Knowing how fast these salts dissolve, Stipp says, can help scientists understand whether the ash is dangerous to drinking water.

The researchers kept washing the ash, but even after being stirred around in water for two weeks it kept its sharp edges, Stipp says. ?The particles remain extremely sharp even after they?ve been grinding against each other.?

Ash that was produced right after Eyjafjallaj?kull exploded on April 14 was more abrasive than the sample collected 12 days later, and was also smaller and more powdery, the team found. Many of the explosive ash bits glommed onto larger particles ? suggesting that scientists may have underestimated the fraction made of particles less than 10 micrometers across, a limit often used to mark a breathing hazard.

Other labs could follow the same tests to see how dangerous a particular eruption is, says Stipp.

Another upcoming study supports the idea that Eyjafjallaj?kull?s ash clumps together. In a paper to appear in Geology, Jacopo Taddeucci of Italy?s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and colleagues describe ash from the final days of the eruption in May 2010. Even then, Eyjafjallaj?kull was spitting out both sharp, dense fragments and more fragile, irregularly shaped ones, says team member Daniele Andronico, also at the Italian institute.

Ash sometimes clumped together in aggregates, the team found. On hitting the ground, these aggregates broke apart into a cloud of smaller particles, dropping more particles than expected. The research shows that volcanoes don?t always play by the rule book, says Andronico.

Samsung Infuse 4G is AT&T's first 21Mbps smartphone

AT&T has been adding a little dash (and asterisk) of 4G to all its phones as of late, but not all of those handsets are created equal -- the Motorola Atrix 4G, HTC Inspire 4G and HP Veer 4G are technically capable of only HSDPA Category 10, which equates to maximum download speeds of 14.4Mbps. Not so for the new Samsung Infuse 4G, as it's been boosted to HSDPA Category 14, which bumps its particular flavor of 4G up to 21Mbps. That has AT&T playing in the same arena as T-Mobile, assuming that your local cell towers have the fiber backhaul in place... and assuming that T-Mobile doesn't make good on promises to deliver some 42Mbps (HSPA+ Category 20) handsets before AT&T catches up. And yes, the uploads should be fine, too -- AT&T says the Infuse 4G supports HSUPA Category 6, which should give us maximum rates of 5.76Mbps when firing files into the clouds.

Global spending on enterprise software grew 8.5 percent in 2010 to $245 billion following a 2.5 percent drop-off in 2009, suggesting the industry is shaking off the effects of the economic downturn and starting more new projects, according to figures released by analyst firm Gartner on Thursday.

Some regions fared better than others, however, with Japan and Western Europe seeing a "relatively modest" uptick, while Asia-Pacific and Latin American countries had growth rates in the teens, or nearly twice the average, Gartner said.

Microsoft stood at the top of the market-share pack, with 22.4 percent, assisted by the release of Windows 7 and Office 2010, according to Gartner. The company's increased focus on infrastructure software and application development tools helped as well, the report said.

IBM kept its second-place berth thanks in part to strong sales of WebSphere middleware and Tivoli system management tools, Gartner said. It also made new forays into applications for e-commerce, marketing, and sales, Gartner noted.

Big Blue would take the top spot if Microsoft's sales of Office and Windows to consumers were left out of the study, the firm added.

Oracle experienced the most growth of the top five enterprise software vendors, with revenue rising 19.4 percent. Growth was strongest in areas such BI (business intelligence) and security, Gartner said.

VMware led the top 25 companies with about 41 percent growth rate, according to Gartner. That figure was likely helped by the company's string of acquisitions last year, which included email and collaboration vendor Zimbra as well as security provider TriCipher.

Such consolidation shows no sign of ending "as vendors and service providers look to expand their customer bases, add unique features aligned to a vertical-market or technology function, and improve overall market presence," Gartner analyst Tom Eid said in a statement.

The rebound in enterprise software spending dovetailed with a rise in IT services revenue during 2010, according to another Gartner report this week.

IT services spending grew 3.1 percent to $793 billion last year, with IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Fujitsu taking the top three market share berths. That compares with a 5.1 percent drop during 2009, according to Gartner.

It?s certainly a great idea, as using maps on the iPad is way nicer than peeking at the iPhone?s small screen. I was skeptical at the time and rightly so ? it turned out to be bunk, with the iPad happily finding itself using Wi-Fi triangulation alone.

I?ll be sticking with my current combo of 3G iPad and crappy, Samsung Beyonc? cellphone, but for those of you convinced about the joys of tethering a Wi-Fi iPad, this app costs a single, solitary buck.

Tyler Perry Vs. Spike Lee: A Debate Over Class And 'Coonery'

The battle between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry is less a battle about film than class and the popular black aesthetic.

Spike Lee imagines himself the keeper of a flame that, in many ways, he extinguished some years ago. During the 1990s, his films, while important, had become too preachy and pedantic to entertain, culminating in "Bamboozled," a remarkable film so heavy-handed it remains difficult to sit through. His films became his personal pulpit instead of stories well-told.

Perry's movies don't pretend to be high-art or heavily message-oriented. The irony may be that Perry and Lee tell basically the same stories, about the importance of spirituality, black pride and self-reliance. The key distinction is that Perry's films speak to a different audience than do Lee's, and less artfully so.

Perry's films have gained a reputation, fairly or not, as low-class. Lee's work is usually described as high-brow?somewhere, but not actually in theaters lately.

That said, this fact is clear: Tyler Perry does broker in coons and buffoonery. His stories rely heavily on popular caricatures of black people behaving badly.

But so what? Could we name a dramatic film that doesn't feature one negative ethnic, racial or social stereotype? Nope. Woody Allen's work is packed with yukels and yentas; Martin Scorcese's canon was built largely on plots about gangsters and gumbas, and John Hughes made a career of pitting 1980s' working-class whites against drug-addicted yuppie puppies and their dim parents.

Stereotypes feed drama, and drama makes good cinema. So, Perry's use of stereotypes is not a valid criticism.

The big knock against Perry is that he seems compelled to tell exactly the same stories over and over again, while a good number of blacks want to see more diverse fare. Notably, when Perry tried to step out of that bag, he was castigated.

Lee's work has evolved. Perry's detractors should allow for his films to undergo the same process.

Moviegoers shouldn't depend on just a handful of artists to tell the wide variety of stories that need telling. Spike Lee and the dreadlocked, open-mic, finger snappers should spend less time taking Perry to task and more time supporting independent black film.

Some black people think Perry's work reinforces some white people's negative perceptions of blacks and generally paints a negative portrait of an entire race of people, as if any single film or filmmaker is capable of that.

The bottom line is black people want more choices in the mainstream, and not just art-house films that are difficult to find.

'Treme,' Episode 11: Fourteen Months After

Season one of Treme opened with the placard "Three Months After"; the season two premiere tells us we're now "Fourteen Months After," in November 2006. If anything, this opening episode establishes that not much has changed in post-Katrina New Orleans ? and what has changed isn't necessarily for the better.

With the slow return of residents comes the faster return of violent crime; the police department has its hands full with it. The return of residents also means that Chief Lambreaux gets kicked out of the bar he's been squatting in; it doesn't mean that Creighton is coming back to the Bernette family. (The young Sofia seems to be assuming her late father's place as YouTube-enabled narrator, Greek chorus and voice of the city's pent-up anger, while Toni Bernette's fight with the city on behalf of musicians is only getting worse.) Ladonna is still trying to operate the bar despite her partner's protestations; her ex, Antoine Batiste, is dealing with an abandoned property his girlfriend's family owned but has no documentation for. And the emergence of investors like Nelson (Jon Seda) portends the arrival of people looking to capitalize on tragedy ? even if Nelson himself doesn't turn out to be one of them.

Of course, music still lives in the city, and this time around we have some new faces and new sounds. To break down the music of the season two premiere, WBGO's Josh Jackson joins me again over email to discuss the songs and live performances. (We'll be doing this every week, like we did last season.)

Patrick Jarenwattananon: Okay. First, the live music. Why is Batiste visiting his teacher's grave and playing for him? Does that have to do with the fact that it's All Saints Day?

Josh Jackson: November 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation still celebrated widely in South Louisiana. That means good Catholics don't bother with the affairs of anyone but God. They attend Mass and visit the tombs of their departed loved ones. It's a nice way to keep life on your mind ? laying flowers, lighting votive candles, painting graves ... or, in this case, playing "Buddy Bolden's Blues" for your trombone teacher.

PJ: By the way, I really like the little detail about the kid who Lambreaux mentored starting to pick up the trumpet. Little dude just walks down the street practicing, and it's totally a normal thing in New Orleans.

JJ: That young man, Jaron Willliams, is a real-life member of The Roots of Music program. Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Rebirth Brass Band's Derrick Tabb and others formed a free, after-school music education activity for kids ages 9-14. They have a marching band. Looks like he picked the right instrument for the ladies, according to Antoine Batiste's comments later in the episode.

PJ: The next big music scene features Annie playing with The Subdudes in Connecticut. She sings harmony in one number, and plays obbligato fiddle in the other. That's a pretty big gig for someone who was busking just a year earlier.

JJ: She's definitely on an upward trajectory. The Subdudes are a really cool band. They have a rambling roots vibe not unlike The Band. Most of them are from the River Parishes areas outside of New Orleans ? it's much more country out there. I do like the sound of Steve Amadee's tambourine and percussion. John Magnie is a dynamic performer. Annie's fiddle makes a nice addition to these songs, "Light in Your Eyes" and "Carved in Stone."

PJ: Keeping it in the Northeast, the next music scene is at ... Jazz at Lincoln Center! Delmond Lambreaux is playing with a version of the Christian Scott Quintet ? Scott, of course, is the New Orleans-raised trumpeter now based in New York ? funny, of course, because Delmond's character is partially based on Scott's life story. I recognize some other faces too: Jamire Williams on drums and Matt Stevens are regulars in that band, plus Luques Curtis on bass, and is who is that on piano?

JJ: It's pianist Lawrence Fields, who could benefit from a wider angle shot. They play a tune called "Second Line/Joe Avery's Piece." According to Fields, "We shot that just after coming back from tour (the day after, I believe). Everyone was pretty fried, but it was a lot of fun."

PJ: Okay, so we ought to mention the slightly forced scene that follows right after, which seems to be written just for the jazz dorks in the audience (guilty!). Delmond is talking to some corny academic types (ugh, guilty again) after his gig with Christian Scott about the differences between New Orleans and New York. (One pointy-headed dude calls Wynton Marsalis "the deracinated synthesis of New Orleans trad-jazz and big band swing," which I find hilarious.) Basically, the New York kids get to show off their ideas about the New Orleans jazz scene, that it's stuck in a "tourist economy," too caught up in trad-jazz ? they pull out the m-word, "minstrel." For them, Delmond sounds good because he left that stuff behind in New Orleans; Delmond feels differently.

What do you make of it? To me, it feels like the show is setting up an issue with no correct resolution.

JJ: That scene induced a lot of wincing. There's so much forced intellectual space between the words "folk" and "art." At the end of the day, you don't always need a complicated analysis for something that makes you feel good.

I've spent time in both Jazz at Lincoln Center and New Orleans. I have had moments of total euphoria attending professional gigs in New Orleans and New York hotels, backyards, dive bars, non-profit spaces, jazz clubs, concert halls, festivals and world stages. It's perfectly natural to accept or reject what musicians are creating on your own terms, but don't dismiss it by talking above your pay grade. It'll only get you in trouble.

When I worked at WWOZ, I marched in a parade wearing a giant plaster head of Sidney Bechet. The temperature was more than 90 degrees that day, and I honestly thought I was going to die inside Bechet's head. I thought of that very true story to illustrate a great quote from his autobiography, Treat It Gentle:

But, you know, no music is my music. It's everybody's who can feel it. You're here ... well, if there's music, you feel it ? then it's yours, too. You got to be in the sun to feel the sun. It's that way with music, too.

PJ: Okay, onward. The unfortunately named brass band Bonerama, with all those trombones in the front line, plays Tipitina's. I hear a tune called "Mr. Go."

JJ: MRGO, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, was a federal navigation project that resulted in the widespread loss of wetlands and coastal habitat in the marshland surrounding New Orleans. When this area was healthy, it was a natural defense barrier against storms.

As for Bonerama, you gotta appreciate the humor of lower brass family members. Craig Klein and Mark Mullins, two former trombonists in Harry Connick Jr.'s Big Band, started this group. They do fun covers, if you're into hearing a lot of brass play "War Pigs" or "Frankenstein." You can find "Mr. Go" on a 2006 live recording from Tipitina's called Bringing It Home. They also play a funky version of Monk's "Epistrophy" and The Meters' "Cabbage Alley" on that disc. It's on Bandcamp.

PJ: It wouldn't be an episode of Treme without John Boutte. Literally, since he sings the theme song, but also he does "Accentuate the Positive" with Annie and Paul Sanchez, plus another song where Sonny sits in. It's crazy that this dude John Boutte regularly plays tiny, unamplified rooms like that ? but he does.

JJ: John sings his original, "Sisters," and those are all names of his Boutte family siblings. I first heard it on his album At the Foot of Canal Street. Listening to him latch on to the affirmative of Johnny Mercer's lyrics make me want to see him at Oak Bar, Feinstein's or frankly anywhere in New York.

PJ: Finally, for the closing bit: An actual rapper! Not just any dude off the street, either: That's Juvenile, he of "Slow Motion" and "Back That Azz Up" fame. (Videos are somewhat NSFW, but: "Cash Money Records takin' over for the '99 and the 2000!") And he's with the funk band Galactic and a horn section.

JJ: Members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band make a fine horn section. They're all playing the title song from a record Galactic made with a bunch of hip-hop artists called From the Corner to the Block. There's also a complete music video of this performance filmed at Tipitina's, and available on iTunes. It's a nice opportunity to hear the synthesis of styles.

PJ: Speaking of New Orleans hip-hop, we were told we'd see more this season, and there's a fair amount in this episode. We hear a bit of Lil Wayne and Birdman's "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" megahit in the strip club ? more New Orleans superstars. And 10th Ward Buck's song "Drop & Gimme 50" is played under Sofia's video, plus on WWOZ. In fact, Davis gets in trouble for playing too much bounce/rap. There seems to be a tension between the jazz/funk/R&B continuum and hip-hop, which is incompletely resolved, Juve appearances notwithstanding.

JJ: WWOZ was never really invested in hip-hop. That's not to say that there aren't some volunteer DJs who know the music and promote the occasional dalliance with it. Whether you like it or not, brass players and hip-hop MCs will continue to collaborate. I think commercial radio stations like WYLD have carried the hip-hop banner far more effectively.

PJ: Latin or Latin-feeling music got some attention here, too, I suspect to underpin the growing Latino community and the arrival of Jon Seda's character Nelson Hidalgo. But it's worth noting that those tunes ? the song Davis cleans his house to, and the one Jon Seda's character plays on the jukebox ? those are by New Orleans artists.

JJ: We hear The Iguanas, a local Tex-Mex band, perform Joe Cabral's "Para Donde Vas," and Ladonna has "El Pavo" from Wardell Quezergue's Slammin' Big Band on her jukebox. There's still a dedicated salsa scene in New Orleans. People like to dance there.

PJ: I should also mention that Sonny is seen playing "Basin Street Blues" in the French Quarter, and that a very young brass band which calls itself the Baby Boyz is busking there, too, playing "I'll Fly Away." That's so important in New Orleans, right? This dramatization of street performers, and how teenagers still play around town for fun and a couple spare bucks.

JJ: Sonny is singing the Glenn Miller/Jack Teagarden verse of Spencer Williams' "Basin Street Blues," a tune about New Orleans' red-light district, Storyville. You can always hustle for a few bucks on the streets.

PJ: Is there anything else we need to unpack? Lemon Ice? Frenchulettas? Reggie Bush?

JJ: My Brocato's routine is to get two sesame cookies and zuppa inglese ice cream. I usually got the lemon ice pre-packed to go ? for the freezer. It's delicious. If you go to Liuzza's on Bienville in Mid-City, get the frosted mug. I like the Frenchuletta a little more than the muffaletta because it's a hot sandwich. My wife makes them here in New York, but we can't get good Italian or French bread conveniently. When Saints running back Reggie Bush is healthy, he's dangerous. Will the Saints even get a chance to play this year? We'll see. If they do, the first game is at your beloved Lambeau Field, PJ.

Jackie Chan, Zhang Ziyi Kick Off Inaugural Beijing Film Festival

BEIJING ? Jackie Chan and Zhang Ziyi joined an array of Chinese government officials to welcome global movie industry guests to the opening night of the 1st Beijing International Film Festival on Saturday at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

On the red carpet inside the glass and steel structure known informally as "the Egg," director John Woo also helped wave in a select group of international film festival directors, trade delegates, heavy hitting producers and a handful of Hollywood studio representatives.

The six-day BJIFF will mix the screenings of 100 imported and 60 Chinese films, including such Hollywood blockbusters as The Social Network and acclaimed recent Chinese fare such as Buddha Mountain by director Li Yu.

The festival opens at a time when China's sales of movie tickets are strong ? up 64% last year to $1.5 billion ? but few Chinese films sell overseas. Organizers in the Beijing government now are keen to bring their city's cinema culture and movie business up to par with the global reputation the capital gained in sports in 2008.

Guest of honor, Liu Qi, president of the erstwhile Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee and a member of China's Politburo, declared the festival open and Co-Chairmen Beijing Mayor Guo Jinlong and Cai Fuchao, minister of the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, offered welcoming remarks that were super-titled for non-Chinese speaking guests.

Each politician emphasized to the nearly full house of about 5,000 guests seated just a few hundred yards west of the symbolic heart of China's one-party government in Tiananmen Square, that Beijing is the center of China's film industry.

To help them drive their point home, the night's third speaker, Marco Mueller, director of the Venice International Film Festival, addressed the crowd in both English and, to the crowd's delight, good Mandarin.

"The birth of BJIFF is a great event for the international film industry," Mueller said, noting that China's capital was "well on the path to becoming one of the world's great modern metropolises, yet it still possesses an irresistible charm."

The hasty organization of the BJIFF, first publicized internationally in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, had some observers wondering if it was designed to steal a march on the Shanghai International Film Festival, held each June, and refocus in the hands of the central government control of an industry deemed a key part of the Chinese Communist Party's plans to use all media to improve China's image around the world.

"As one of the historical cornerstones of China's film industry, Beijing possesses the financial and creative resources to become a film capital," Mueller said. Estimates show that about 200 million Chinese now can afford to go the movies on a regular basis.

In attendance and hoping to find good Chinese films to take home, were more than a dozen international film festival directors, including, among others, Cameron Bailey from Toronto, Lee Yong Kwan from Busan, John Cooper from Sundance, Wilfred Wong from Hong Kong, Tom Yoda from Tokyo and Maxine Williamson from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

"Beijing always provides a great networking opportunity," Chuck Boller, director of the Hawaii International Film Festival said. "I'm so pleased to see how many people I know who also are here."

Action man Dwayne Johnson has a Facebook fan to thank for his role as a federal marshall in the new Fast & The Furious sequel - producer/star Vin Diesel originally had Tommy Lee Jones in his mind for the part.

Diesel was scouting for ideas from fans online just before filming on Fast 5 started and one suggested Johnson should play an out-of-character bad guy.

The XXX star thought it was a great idea and started calling the former wrestler's agents.

Johnson says, "There's a lot of people taking credit for me being in the movie... but I know, to Vin, that was, like, a defining moment for him, because he had read it (script) and, at that time, a director was flying in to meet with him... So give a lot of credit to that fan."

NEW YORK ? Given the deluge of movie retreads and jukebox assemblies on Broadway, entirely original musicals are always welcome. But The People in the Picture is an odd duck. While it?s ultimately touching and contains some charming melodies, the show?s earnestly old-fashioned blend of multi-generational melodrama, Holocaust tragedy and Borscht Belt humor makes for a lumpy stew.

Chief attraction of the Roundabout Theater Company production is Donna Murphy, one of Broadway?s classiest leading ladies. She plays Raisel Rabinowitz, the star player of a pre-WWII Yiddish theater company called the Warsaw Gang.

The action shifts between Poland in the turbulent decade of 1935-1946 and New York in 1977, where the elderly Raisel recounts stories from her past to her enraptured granddaughter, Jenny (Rachel Resheff). Physically and vocally, Murphy slips back and forth with fluidity and authority between playing an ailing yet still feisty old woman and her tough-minded younger self. Even in this well-intentioned but wobbly vehicle, Murphy?s work demonstrates again that she?s one of musical theater?s most dramatically nuanced performers.

The score marks a late entry into musicals for Mike Stoller, one half of legendary songwriting hit factory Leiber & Stoller, working with the team?s long-ago Brill Building discovery Artie Butler.

Book and lyrics are by novelist Iris Rainer Dart, best known for Beaches, which also is being developed as a musical. Like the 1988 Bette Midler film adapted from that novel, her work here combines syrupy sentimentality with knowing insights into rocky female relationships. The writer also brings a shticky vaudevillian sensibility. (She apparently never met a tuchas joke she didn?t like; not for nothing have politically incorrect Broadway insiders quietly rechristened the show Jewsical!) The comedy to some degree tempers the material?s cloying sincerity yet stops it being as emotional as it perhaps might have been.

The rhymes in Dart?s lyrics are often so shamelessly hoary that you laugh and wince at the same time: deadpan/bedpan; bamboozle ?em/Jerusalem; glamorous/mammarous. The writer?s approach mirrors Raisel?s habit of deflecting the suffering in her life with a joke.

The sturdy ensemble embraces the challenges of the material, and director Leonard Foglia has staged the show with a firm grasp of its constant time jumps, unfolding within designer Riccardo Hernandez?seffective set of picture frames within frames. Raisel?s fellow Warsaw Gang players enliven the Polish scenes and haunt the 1977 sections as benevolent ghosts.

The third point of the central triangle is Raisel?s divorced daughter Red (Nicole Parker), whose thorny relationship with her mother and ambivalence toward her history are explained gradually through disclosure of the hard wartime choices that soured the love between them. It?s far from fresh, but the importance of self-knowledge and of maintaining a connection to the past is well developed as a theme.

Among the supporting cast, Alexander Gemignani strikes a soulful note as a homosexual troupe member who saves Raisel from disgrace; Joyce Van Patten is funny as a former ing?nue still hard-selling her charms despite having stacked on the years and the pounds; and Parker and Resheff make the most of figures whose outlines are familiar from countless weepies stitched out of the bonds and battles of women across the generations.

The story might have been better served as a four-hanky screen tearjerker, but Murphy elevates the hackneyed material. Her Raisel is a difficult woman whose warmth toward her granddaughter contrasts with her needling criticism of her daughter. Beneath that, she etches layers of vivid experience, both painful and joyous. Whether she?s clowning around as the ?Dancing Dybbuk? or reflecting on the cruel tricks of an enfeebled mind in the melancholy ?Selective Memory,? she endows the show with a central life force.

In the final part of his guide to F1 photography, Jamey Price shows how to take distinctive and original pictures at F1 races.

Why do we love motorsport? For me it?s the colour and flair, the movement and details, combined with the pressure to nail the photo and have it published on the world stage for all to see.

I honed my skills as a sports photographer with horse racing photography. Believe it or not, horse racing is very similar to shooting motorsport. It?s fast-paced. It?s intense.

You get few chances to get the photo and you have to be ready for anything. That sounds a bit like motorsport, doesn?t it?

No credentials? No problem

The problem that most fans will encounter when shooting motorsport is the access. Formula One in particular puts fans as far away as possible while still trying to give you a spectacle.

It?s a sad fact that getting great shots at newer tracks like Turkey and Korea will be much more difficult than shooting somewhere like Monaco, Monza or somewhere where you are much closer to the action.

The other problem you?ll encounter will be the very high debris fences that protect you from an out of control F1 car. Fortunately there are ways to overcome both of these problems and still get great images.

Plan your weekend

But just because you?ve not got the credentials to shoot beside the Formula 1 snappers does not mean you can?t get great images from the weekend.

Start on Thursday during the pit walk. Make it your mission to cover the Grand Prix like you have credentials. Tell a story.

See someone painted from head to toe in McLaren ^[1] silver? Take a photo of them. See what you can do with trying to capture the atmosphere around you.

I will stress this over and over and it is something I make a point of telling myself every time I pick up the camera but look for details. The beauty in life, and motorsport, is the details.

Once practice gets rolling on Friday switch gears and start trying to be creative. If you have a general admission pass, walk around during the Formula BMW, Porsche Supercup or GP2/GP3 races and look for where the best spots to shoot are.

Often the best thing you can do is put your camera down for five minutes and use your eyes.

At a Formula 1 race, everyone has a camera and thinks they?re a photographer. So you can either follow those amateurs around and shoot what they shoot and get the same kind of images or you can use your feet and your head and find something different.

A lot of people hope to be professional photographers and believe me, you will not stand out in the crowd if you come home with images that everyone else has. This is your time to show how you see the world and it had better be different from every other guy with a nice DSLR standing by the fence.

Getting fences out of your pictures

Speaking of fences, those debris fences will ruin your photos. Fortunately there are ways of tricking your camera into thinking the fence is not there.

Your eye does the same thing. For a moment take your finger and place it at arms length away from your face. Now look at it. Your finger and all that?s around it and in the background are more or less in focus.

Now bring your finger to the tip of your nose and look past it. You barely even notice your finger any more ? as if it has disappeared.

You can do the same thing with your camera. The debris fence is your finger. Move yourself as close as you can to the fence and zoom as far in with your lens as possible and lower the aperture as much as you can and suddenly the fence is almost non-existent. Cool, huh?

The moment you start standing farther away from the fence or use a higher aperture stop, the fence will come back into the photo. So make sure you?re right up along the fence, shooting with a higher shutter speed and a low aperture and you can get some great images trackside that make it look like there?s no fence at all.

Use the conditions

As a photographer, you should always use what you are given with conditions, maximize it and compensate with creativity.

If you?re stuck at the top of a grandstand a hundred yards from the cars driving by, use that to your advantage. Instead of zooming in as far as you can trying to see Fernando?s eyes as he passes the start finish line, zoom out and try a panning shot to get lots of motion and colour.

As a standard I like using a slower shutter speed to get the feel of motion if the cars I?m shooting are running parallel to my position.

Shooting a car from the side at 1/2500 of a second and F5.6 will generally not be anything to write home about. That same image at 1/60 of a second will be a completely different one. It will be bordering on abstract with the amount of motion you capture. Find the balance and what looks good to you.

A car that is driving straight toward you will be much harder to pan with than the one you just shot that was parallel to you. In this situation, up your shutter speed again to freeze it in its tracks.

The rule of thirds

Something professional photographers will talk a lot about and use frequently is the rule of thirds. Imagine your viewfinder. It is generally a rectangle with the two longest sides on the top and bottom.

Now imagine two vertical lines spaced evenly from left to right and another two lines horizontally. It will make a grid with nine boxes in your viewfinder.

The rule of thirds basically says that an image will be more compelling and interesting if you place the subject on the far left or right vertical line instead of smack dab in the middle of the frame. Many DSLR?s now ship with the ability to display grid boxes in your viewfinder so you don?t have to imagine the lines are there.

Once you?ve got into a rhythm with your camera and you?re feeling good about the images you?re making, step back and try something new. The worst thing you can do is come home with a thousand versions of the same picture.

Get a different angle if you can. Your legs are the best thing that you have at your disposal to making a great image. Don?t forget to keep looking around you for an interesting fan, angle, car, tree, whatever.

Use the light. Be it flat and boring from a dull cloudy day, or gorgeous sunlight like those afternoon races produce. And practice, practice, practice.

What is innovation? That was the question facing a panel of experts Monday (April 25) during the O Music Awards' Most Innovative Music Video live debate presented by FUZE®, in which the merits of the five finalists were debated and such icons as music-video director Wayne Isham ('NSYNC, Metallica) and music executive/ Global14.com founder Jermaine Dupri attempted to pick a winner.

Among the nominees were video mavens OK Go's "Back From Kathmandu," a flash-mob-style piece in which the band led a parade through the streets of Los Angeles. "That's what's nice about videos today period, they don't have to be traditional videos. ... They can be hybrids of a couple of different things if you want them to be," said bandmember Tim Nordwind. The video was a mash-up documentary of OK Go getting together with friends to play their songs as they walked down the streets (and are tracked by a GPS system that followed them for eight hours as they spelled out the band's name) as well as a traditional clip with a narrative.

For Isham, who traveled around Los Angeles himself for Mötley Crüe's "Girls, Girls, Girls" clip, the OK Go effort didn't feel so innovative, while Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich said it wasn't memorable enough to warrant the prize, admitting she didn't even remember what song it was for.

Au Revoir Simone's interactive coloring-book effort for the $500 "Knight of Wands" clip took a simplistic approach, with an unseen hand moving a cursor to add color to a simple image of three women standing inside a mansion. Fans could make their own version and a Flickr page allowed them to upload their own takes on the effort.

Isham was shocked to hear that the band was able to pull off such a low-dough video, but he did like that they could do it on a shoestring and appreciated the ability of fans to get involved. "What's innovative: the budget, the film technique, the thought process?" asked Isham, speaking on behalf of directors, while Dupri said if you can make something for three figures that is seen as much as a video made for seven figures, that's innovative. Ehrlich loved that the video was made in flash and went viral, judging it to be innovative for that reason. "It didn't get popular because it cost $500," she said.

"It's not the price, it's the name. His videos mean something," Dupri said about the enduring mystique of having someone like fellow panelist Isham or Hype Williams helm your video.

When it came to the Arcade Fire's "We Used to Wait," a Chris Milk joint that was filmed and edited over three months, the director used a series of Google maps, satellite images and HTML videos to create what Google's Aaron Koblin called "an interactive HTML short." Because it uses the Google Maps app, the video is personalized for each user, bringing their location into the mix. Ehrlich said the clip was the epitome of using a new technology to create something fresh. "It's beyond a music video; it's an interactive music experience," she said.

Isham loved the imagery in the video, but would have been more immersed in the emotion of the music if he'd been able to find a Google spot near his hometown that was more resonant than a local gas station. "If it can only be seen and appreciated by techno nerds, is it art for art's sake?," Isham asked, after discussing with Dupri what the point was of a clip that looks great but is hard to find or you might not be able to watch on your computer if you don't have the technology.

"I think this is the future of the world," Dupri said. "This is what people actually want. The world wants to be involved in the things that we do ... all of these videos have that type of interaction."

When it came to the choose-your-own-adventure video for "Keep Your Head Up" from Andy Grammer, the most traditional performance-based "story" clip featuring the ability to customize by picking one of two choices on the screen, the panel was split. Dupri loved the song and felt the video was "crazy" creative but once again lamented that you can't "play" with it when it's on TV, which for decades was the traditional place to see videos.

Ehrlich didn't love the song, so it was hard for her to click through multiple times to see all the iterations. Isham said he's been intrigued by the idea of choose-your-own for years, having tried it with Metallica's live show with the San Francisco Symphony but was impressed with how seamless Grammer's effort video was.

Via Skype, Grammer explained that a company in Israel called Interlude came up with the technology that allows you to change direction based on what story line you want to go with. "It's just never been done before to this degree," Grammer said of why he thought his video belonged in the mix with the other artists.

Finally, they took on Robyn's "Killing Me," a 3-D, text-driven assault of words, phrases and geometric shapes that used Twitter to encourage fans to provide their own commentary. The singer said her idea with the album was to use her website to communicate in an interactive way with her fans. "We wanted to do something that felt real," she said of the decision to give the video (in which she doesn't appear) its own Twitter feed. "I wanted to invite people into this complaining orgy that I'm doing."

Moderator and MTV News rock editor James Montgomery wondered if this one was Robyn's most innovative video or even a video at all. Caryn Ganz from Yahoo!'s The Amplifier loved that you can still tweet in text to the clip all these months later, which to her made it feel very contemporary. Isham, though smitten with Robyn, said the tension in the video got to him, while Ehrlich said she was over 3-D effects and didn't think the concept was that special.

"It's repetitive. ... I wouldn't watch this over and over again just to watch different hashtags," she said. Dupri was concerned about whether "Killing Me" is global enough and can reach people all over the world and not just those who have access to the technology.

The fans voted for Robyn, and the panel picked Grammer and Robyn as their other top two finalists. "I like both of the videos as far as innovation and the concept of what they were trying to bring to light," said Dupri, with Montgomery noting that they couldn't be more different, though both used the Internet to achieve their end goal.

In the end, Isham, Dupri and Ehrlich went with Grammer, while the fans and Ganz chose Robyn, giving the award to Grammer, who will pick up his magical cube during Thursday night's inaugural O Music Awards event.

Fun fact about the Mobi Products Hard Shell case for the Droid Incredible 2 -- I completely for got it was on the phone, and that's not something I can say too often about a case.

Here's the deal: It's a two-part case that snaps together. It's plastic, but the feel of the plastic is nearly identical to the case of the Droid Incredible 2 itself. The inside is glossy, but the exterior is soft and smooth and is really makes you think you're carrying around a naked phone.

The are the usual cutouts for all the ports and camera lens, and the seam where the two halves of the case snap together are visible but are cut so well (at least in the unit we have) so that you don't really notice it. There's a notch in the left-hand bezel for removing the case, which can be done easily enough.

The short version is this: I've had this case on the Droid Incredible 2 for a few days now and completely forgot about it. That's as much because I got the black version (it also comes in blue and purple) and because the look (it's got the same plateaued back cover) and feel (see above) are almost exactly like the phone itself.

Ridiculously fresh seafood. Check. Farms and farmers markets galore. Yup. Great scenery. You bet. Real estate deals. Indeed. Locals and visitors who are serious about good food. Definitely. For these reasons and more, a growing number of chefs are decamping Downeast.

Geoffroy Deconinck is latest chef to trade in his fancy toque for a new start in Maine. Having worked side by side with Daniel Boulud, David Bouley, and Alain Ducasse, the 38-year-old Belgian is the newly named executive chef at Natalie?s restaurant at the Camden Harbour Inn.

Deconinck joins trend leader Melissa Kelly of Primo (Rockland), who got her start with Alice Waters at Chez Panisse; Krista Kern of Bresca (Portland), who chefed with Guy Savoy, holder of three Michelin stars, in Las Vegas; Michelle and Steve Cory of 555, who did time in Napa (she with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry) before opening their Portland restaurant; and others who?ve moved north in recent years to carve out their piece of Maine's culinary wonderland.

But it?s not just the salt air and locavore-mad diners that lured Deconinck to quaint Camden village on Penboscot Bay?the inn?s savvy owners had something to do with the move. Oscar Verest and Raymond Brunyanszki have had a special spot for Natalie?s since they opened the doors to their stylish inn in 2007, insisting on fine ingredients, great service, and sophisticated alternatives to the lobster roll (on the menu now: Deconinck?s asparagus risotto with spring garlic foam; grilled salmon with herb sabayon; and local lamb with fennel puree).

This ain't your grandma's WiFi -- that is, unless your grandma is 48 year-old Leticia Aguirre. The Houston woman became the host of the very first "super WiFi" hotspot, earlier this week -- the new network takes advantage of unused UHF TV channels to bring internet service to underserved communities. In collaboration with researchers at Rice University, a Houston-based non-profit fittingly referred to as Technology for All (TFA), facilitated the setup and is in the process of deploying more whitespace hotspots across the area. Could the iPhone 5 look like a beveled iPod touch?

See that up there? That could be your next iPhone -- or it could be a tear-shaped dream. It's a mock-up of what is said to be the iPhone 5, according to anonymous sources quoted by Joshua Topolsky. A continuation of the concepts laid out in our post-CES look at what's next for Apple, the design here is said to be thin, metal-backed, tapered, and sporting a 3.7-inch display with the same 960 x 640 resolution in the iPhone 4's retina display -- resulting in a slight drop from that phone's vaunted 326ppi density. The home button is quite obviously enlarged, possibly adding some thumbable gestures into the mix. Internals are said to include a "swipable" area, possibly meaning NFC, along with a Qualcomm Gobi chipset with support for CDMA and GSM, so this could be the one phone to rule all the carriers. Or, it might wind up only ever having domain over a single .PSD file. To us, well, it looks a little too thin to be packing all that and a bag of antennas as suggested and, with all the weight at the top, we can see these things flying out of hands left and right. But, we're certainly willing to be surprised. Place your bets in comments below.

Update: The source has been updated with a note indicating that the bevel may be "a little exaggerated" in the above mock-up and that the back may not be metal after all.

News of Osama Bin Laden?s Death Was Leaked on Twitter

News organizations were given a heads up around 9:45 p.m. ET that President Obama was going to make a big announcement about 45 minutes later.

But it seems that the person who actually made the announcement that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces was Keith Urbahn, the chief of staff for the former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, via his Twitter account.
?
?So I?m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden. Hot damn," Urbahn tweeted at 10:25 p.m. ET.
?
He then added, ?Don?t know if it?s true, but let?s pray it is.?
?
According to the New York Times, many have credited Urbahn with breaking the news, though he did not actually have firsthand confirmation.

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams -- the first broadcast evening-news anchor to appear on TV screens -- told the Times?that some journalists had received an e-mail saying only: "Get to work."

But following Urbahn?s tweet, anonymous sources at the Pentagon and White House also began to leak the information of Bin Laden?s death, which Obama didn't confirm on the air until 11:35 p.m. ET.

PlayStation Network down for a long count, what's up Sony? (update: down for 24+ hours!)

We've been hit by a big batch of dismayed tips from PlayStation gamers this morning, who are finding themselves unable to log in to the PlayStation Network (again). Sony's response has been to acknowledge there's a problem in the vaguest of terms -- "We're aware certain functions of PlayStation Network are down" -- and to promise an update on the situation as soon as it's available. Alas, that statement was issued over nine hours ago and there's still no word of either a rectification or an explanation for the outage. The error code provided by the console is, as you can see above, somewhat uninformative as well. So come on, Sony, what is going on with your Network?

Update: PSN is acknowledging on its EU blog that the network outage may be a result of "the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party." Still no ETA for when services will be restored.

Update 2: PSN is now reporting that the network may be offline for "a full day or two."

Verizon's LTE network takes the night off, leaves a bunch of Thunderbolt users bewildered

Is your fancy new phone lacking that certain extra G that makes it special? Worry not, it's not just your device, Verizon's entire LTE network seems to be having problems as outages have been reported from across the US. We tested our own Thunderbolt in San Francisco this morning and it was indeed making do with only 3G connectivity. It's important to note that Verizon's 3G network seems to be ticking along quite alright, it's just 4G service that's down at the moment. Some folks have reported losing both 3G and 4G connectivity, but that's owing to a documented issue with 3G provisioning on the Thunderbolt -- we've noted the way to overcome that problem in a previous post. For now, just enjoy your regular-speed mobile internet until the super-fast stuff is fixed and back up.

Update: The Verizon Wireless Twitter account has confirmed the issue, and that the company's network engineers are "working to resolve quickly."

Senator Secures Turnaround in 2010

COLOGNE, Germany - Senator Entertainment, the troubled child of the German film industry, appears to have turned the corner, booking an operating profit of $2.2 million (?1.5 million) last year after losing $5.7 million (? 3.9 million) in 2009.

One-off losses attributed to the collapse of TV production subsidiary Pro TV and currency fluctuations meant Senator still ended 2010 in the red, with a net loss of $730,000 (?500,000) but CEO Helge Sasse said the company will be back in black this year.

Things are looking rosy for Senator thanks to Colin Firth-starrer The King's Speech, which has earned upwards of $22 million so far at the German box office.

Sasse also firmed up the company's financials with a new $10 million line of credit with Israeli bank LEUMI and extended Senator's lucrative DVD licensing deal with German home entertainment group Universum.

But Senator will need a few more hits if it's David O. Russell's Oscar-winner The Fighter has not been a knockout for the distributor, earning less than $1 million and Senator has few surefire titles in its eclectic upcoming slate, which includes Ben Affleck-starrer Company Men, the romantic comedy A Little Bit of Heaven starring Kate Hudson and Gael Garcia Bernal and Swedish crime thriller Easy Money.

Survivor Shuffleboard: Tonight's Redemption Island challenge?which ended predictably in Julie's defeat, despite some teasing by God early on?is a metaphor for this entire season. It's plodding, slow, lacks real action and excitement?and the players aren't going anywhere. They're just shuffling back and forth between camp, Redemption Island, and now the jury. Sure, a few discs were hit outta the court, but I haven't given up on the possibility of Russell Hantz rising up Hunger Games-style from the bowels of the Redemption Island Arena to get this party started.

Peace Out: After Rob stabbed him in the back (twice), Matt took another hit from God. But this time, said Matt, "He hit me with a lot of peace. I think I'm ready to go home. I feel like I came here to accomplish what I set out to do." Not so fast, Jeff Probst chortles after Matt's eighth consecutive victory: "God is not done...You are staying alive on Redemption Island whether you want to be here or not." Two questions: (1) Why didn't he issue proclamations like these to Na'Onka and Purple Kelly last season? But how many strategic moves does Grant have left? He has to see that he is now Rob's greatest threat at camp. This point in the game?when the original alliance has to start turning on itself?is usually exciting, but not this time. The only thing this group is fighting for is Rob's approval and affection; do they even know a million-dollar prize is stake?

NEW YORK ? Given the deluge of movie retreads and jukebox assemblies on Broadway, entirely original musicals are always welcome. But The People in the Picture is an odd duck. While it?s ultimately touching and contains some charming melodies, the show?s earnestly old-fashioned blend of multi-generational melodrama, Holocaust tragedy and Borscht Belt humor makes for a lumpy stew.

Chief attraction of the Roundabout Theater Company production is Donna Murphy, one of Broadway?s classiest leading ladies. She plays Raisel Rabinowitz, the star player of a pre-WWII Yiddish theater company called the Warsaw Gang.

The action shifts between Poland in the turbulent decade of 1935-1946 and New York in 1977, where the elderly Raisel recounts stories from her past to her enraptured granddaughter, Jenny (Rachel Resheff). Physically and vocally, Murphy slips back and forth with fluidity and authority between playing an ailing yet still feisty old woman and her tough-minded younger self. Even in this well-intentioned but wobbly vehicle, Murphy?s work demonstrates again that she?s one of musical theater?s most dramatically nuanced performers.

The score marks a late entry into musicals for Mike Stoller, one half of legendary songwriting hit factory Leiber & Stoller, working with the team?s long-ago Brill Building discovery Artie Butler.

Book and lyrics are by novelist Iris Rainer Dart, best known for Beaches, which also is being developed as a musical. Like the 1988 Bette Midler film adapted from that novel, her work here combines syrupy sentimentality with knowing insights into rocky female relationships. The writer also brings a shticky vaudevillian sensibility. (She apparently never met a tuchas joke she didn?t like; not for nothing have politically incorrect Broadway insiders quietly rechristened the show Jewsical!) The comedy to some degree tempers the material?s cloying sincerity yet stops it being as emotional as it perhaps might have been.

The rhymes in Dart?s lyrics are often so shamelessly hoary that you laugh and wince at the same time: deadpan/bedpan; bamboozle ?em/Jerusalem; glamorous/mammarous. The writer?s approach mirrors Raisel?s habit of deflecting the suffering in her life with a joke.

The sturdy ensemble embraces the challenges of the material, and director Leonard Foglia has staged the show with a firm grasp of its constant time jumps, unfolding within designer Riccardo Hernandez?seffective set of picture frames within frames. Raisel?s fellow Warsaw Gang players enliven the Polish scenes and haunt the 1977 sections as benevolent ghosts.

The third point of the central triangle is Raisel?s divorced daughter Red (Nicole Parker), whose thorny relationship with her mother and ambivalence toward her history are explained gradually through disclosure of the hard wartime choices that soured the love between them. It?s far from fresh, but the importance of self-knowledge and of maintaining a connection to the past is well developed as a theme.

Among the supporting cast, Alexander Gemignani strikes a soulful note as a homosexual troupe member who saves Raisel from disgrace; Joyce Van Patten is funny as a former ing?nue still hard-selling her charms despite having stacked on the years and the pounds; and Parker and Resheff make the most of figures whose outlines are familiar from countless weepies stitched out of the bonds and battles of women across the generations.

The story might have been better served as a four-hanky screen tearjerker, but Murphy elevates the hackneyed material. Her Raisel is a difficult woman whose warmth toward her granddaughter contrasts with her needling criticism of her daughter. Beneath that, she etches layers of vivid experience, both painful and joyous. Whether she?s clowning around as the ?Dancing Dybbuk? or reflecting on the cruel tricks of an enfeebled mind in the melancholy ?Selective Memory,? she endows the show with a central life force.

The Royal Wedding: A Crowd's-Eye View

I watched the royal wedding processional from behind a woman with a sequined Union Jack cocktail dress, flag-themed sunglasses, high-heeled boots, a flag she wore like a cape, and a plastic cup that she kept clarifying she was filling with vodka schnapps, not vodka.

Incidentally, I highly recommend watching every highly anticipated international event in the company of someone who merrily promises that she is not an alcoholic.

This was the royal wedding as the commoners of London got to see it, live and in person. I stood along Whitehall, only a couple of blocks away from Westminster Abbey, where just the day before, everything had looked quite normal.

Today, at 7:00 in the morning London time, Whitehall was surprisingly quiet, with only one layer of people already waiting against the barricades, so there were still good spots to be had. Perhaps to be right up front you had to camp out overnight, but getting up early in the morning was enough to get a great view of the processional.

Early mumblings were that this wasn't a crowd like the ones London produces for some events, but over the course of the next five and a half hours, the sidewalk filled and filled and ultimately overfilled, until we were packed in like so many flag-waving, wedding-watching sardines. Sardines with hats, of course.

In the early morning hours, the gathering crowd was so bored that they cheered for absolutely everything ? a couple of oddballs in costumes, a street cleaning crew who seemed to suspect they were being mocked, and particularly a man on a bicycle who kept pedaling up and down the street doing his best royal wave. The crowd gave Bicycle Man an A-plus.

Most of all, though, they cheered every newly arrived clump of police who ambled down the street. We learned from chatting with the bobby who stood right in front of us that he and his crew had been bused in from west of London and had gotten up at 3:00 in the morning to get there at 8:00. He didn't seem annoyed, but he didn't necessarily seem to consider it the greatest honor he'd ever known, either. "They bus us in, give us a meal, then they tell us to stand here for five hours and not go to the loo," he said with good-humored resignation. The police in general were friendly and a little bored, and if you asked nicely, they'd take a picture of you and your friends.

Around me, other than the woman with the plastic cup, there were several very kind gray-haired ladies, one of whom kept gently asking her husband to stop fidgeting, while acknowledging that she knew he wasn't the least bit interested in anything that was going on. They handed around cherry tomatoes and Pringles, and they were curious about where I came from.

Not that I was the only representative of the press around. Oh, no, not by a long shot. At one point, Ms. Vodka Schnapps went off in search of a restroom and came back to tell us that she'd been interviewed three times (it's the eye-catching outfit), including one interview she said she gave to "two transvestites."

Around 9:30, a military band came by, which didn't really seem to have any connection to anything else that was going on, but we were very excited to see them. To see anything, really. The people on the other side of the street got so restless that they started doing the wave, but efforts to transport it to our side of the street weren't successful. This led to speculation that the other side of the street contained all the Americans. Our side was deemed too English for the wave. At this, everyone turned and looked at me, expecting me to take an American-themed stand about the wave, I suppose, but I let it pass.

On their way to the Abbey, all the notables went by fairly quickly in cars. I completely missed Prince William that time, despite the fact that he was in a bright red military uniform. Others I saw as blurs through car windows: Queen Elizabeth a blot of yellow, and ultimately Kate Middleton a bit of lace I mostly saw driving away.

But the crowd got very excited about all of it. They love Prince William. They love him, these people who waited on the street. They were chatting about how lovely he and Harry were to come out the night before and greet some of those who were camped out outside Clarence House. "Like his mum," someone said. "Not like his dad," someone else muttered.

After we saw everyone drive by, the ceremony finally started. It was piped out to the street from giant loudspeakers, so we heard the vows. We heard the hymns, too, and many sang along.

During the ceremony, soldiers arrived to join the police, a sure sign that the exit processional was considered more in need of security than the arrivals had been.

Also during the ceremony, one of the passing horses dropped an impressive wedding gift in the street right in front of where I was standing. Naturally, we booed the horse. Two men soon arrived with a shovel, a broom, and a little cart to clean up after it. We cheered for the shovel. You can't blame them for cleaning that up quickly, because let's face it: you don't want the metaphor.

After a lusty singalong with "God Save The Queen" as it rang from inside Westminster Abbey, there was another lull while we waited for the big show, which was the departing couple and their guests. It had mercifully not rained on us ? not a drop ? so hopes were high that we'd get to see Kate and William in an open carriage.

And then, after a couple of different groups of people in finery riding horses, there they were, sort of all of a sudden. There's been so much absolute nuttery surrounding all of this that it was a little surreal having them drive right by in an open carriage, just a guy and the girl he just married. No cans tied to the back of the carriage, but you half-expected to see them.

Sure enough, after that ? and after Kate's sister Pippa came by in another open carriage with the bridesmaids, looking preposterously pretty ? we saw the Queen. The Queen of England. I looked in the glass carriage and saw the Queen of England waving at me. Well, not at me personally. (That I know of.) But it was the Queen of England about whom I was just the other day reading a book, and whom I've been seeing on television all my life. There she was. Just kind of rolling by, maybe 20 feet away, on our side of the carriage, waving. You know. As she does.

Based on their reactions to her, this is a big part of why they were there, all these folks. For the kind of person who camps out for a royal wedding, it's an event when you see the Queen. When she was gone, one of the women near me said, a little sad and shocked, "I didn't get a picture of her. I was so mesmerized."

Of course, there's a time to drown yourself in communal love of country and a time to cut and run. As soon as the carriages had passed, the crush was on to either get out of the area entirely or get over to the vicinity of Buckingham Palace in time for the kiss and the flyover by the Royal Air Force that was, at that time, roughly an hour off. I chose to get out.

Getting off the processional route was a surprisingly harrowing experience. Not one where I was actually injured, but one where I was propelled forward and bumped around hard enough to be reminded how people get injured in crowds. And indeed, all day, there were odd little off moments ? people shoving their cameras in front of other people's eyes, someone who wanted to con her way to a better spot by insisting she was just pressing forward for a moment to take a picture, and a woman off to the side of me who decided to angle her large, comical hat in such a way that it continually hit me in the face when she turned her head, which somehow made it considerably less comical, as she may have been able to tell when I gently nudged it out of my vision while muttering, "What is your hat doing?"

But these are small complaints, and not ones that anyone was worried about, particularly. Everyone had fun, everyone saw the Queen (or saw the backs of a lot of other people who saw the Queen), and everyone, from where I was standing, left in one piece in spite of the crowds.

All in all, it was a surprisingly lively party for an event that involved hours and hours of standing around and a few seconds of the world's most famous grandmother waving through a window.

The Secrets to Toning Your Legs

Are you tired of those heavy and bulky looking legs?
In the society where a person's appearance is highly important, it is necessary you focus on how you can make it work on your behalf. If your problem is your legs then, no need to worry; there is several ways to have better and toned looking legs.
Toning your legs may not be an easy thing to do but it doesn't mean that because of the hindrances, you will stick to those awful looking legs, right? So, take it as a challenge and start toning your legs now.
Here are some easy and fast ways that will surely do the trick. Do this and eat right. You will have that pairs that you are always dreaming of. That's for sure.
1. Perform a Squat - This is a resting position where in the weight of the entire body is on the feet. Do this for around 3 minutes every day, preferably holding heavy objects while performing the action. If you want to be challenged a bit further, hold a heavier object while performing the exercise. This will trigger enough stress to the muscles thus, making the exercise more effective. It can really help tone your legs faster than the usual.
2. Walk your way on a slightly inclined floor - Walking is a good way to actually help tone your legs. Walking on an inclined plane will double up the result. You can do this around 15 to 20 minutes every day. You may want to try walking around the neighborhood too. I'm sure there are some roads that are slightly inclined within your block. It will be your perfect exercise spot. And that's not all! This exercise is also good for the butt. Better start looking for those inclines roads around you for this will surely help you tone your legs to perfection.
3. Cardio - As I have said a while ago walking is one of the ways to lose that awful looking legs. But walking needs to be intense to be able to really make a difference. Jogging is one of the ways that can help you have trimmed and better looking legs. You can do it out in a park or in your village. But if you are more on a homey kind of person you can also do this within the comforts of your own house. If you have a flight of stairs, you can jog up and down the stairs for 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Kick boxing and jump rope are also good cardio exercise options that can tone your leg muscles.
4. Bleacher Running - Another good way to tone your legs is to try running on bleachers. If there is a place near you that has bleachers do the bleachers run. Then, after reaching the top, go down slowly. Doing this at least 3 times a week will surely give you very wonderful calves. As you get used to it, you can add up weights by carrying a backpack which will really help build your muscles better. Just make sure your backpack has something heavy inside.
5. Lift those legs - Have you ever tried racing those pairs while lying down? Well, now is the time. This will really help you tone your legs. Now, to do this as I have said, you have to lie down. Then raise those legs up into the air. Do this at least 3 sets of 20 repeats of leg lifting a day. As your gorgeous legs get thinner, you can increase the number of repeats
These are just some of the effective ways to tone the legs. Try it and experience having the legs you are always aiming for. And in no time, you'll see our eyes ogling on those pairs with real gusto.

Ecuador Seizes Drug-Running Super Submarine

For years, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency heard rumors that drug cartels were building submarines to smuggle cocaine up the Pacific coast. Authorities did find primitive submersibles designed for one-way trips to Mexico, but the rumors spoke of something far more ambitious ? a full-sized "super sub" with the ability to make extensive round trips, carrying tons of cargo.

In July 2010, Ecuadorian authorities found such a vessel: a 74-foot long, fully functioning Kevlar-coated submarine, discovered in a remote swamp near the Colombian border.

"They built this without the use of electricity, bringing the parts in essentially by canoe-like boats, several at a time for over a year," Wired magazine's Jim Popkin tells NPR's Neal Conan.

"It can ride underwater for 18 hours at a clip," says Popkin. It had the capacity to haul up to nine million tons of cocaine, and, coated with Kevlar and carbon fiber it is difficult to track. "Like an old World War II sub, when it goes under, you can barely hear it," Popkin says. "... The cartels are willing to spend that kind of time and money, because at the end of the day, you can ship $250 million dollars worth of cocaine to ... Mexico, for transport into the U.S."

For years, rumors circulated that drug cartels planned to build and operate submarines to smuggle cocaine past the Coast Guard. Authorities did find primitive submersibles designed for one-way trips up the Pacific Coast, but the whispers spoke of something far more ambitious: a full-sized super sub with the range for round trips and the capacity for tons of cargo. Nobody ever saw one, until now.

In the current issue of Wired magazine, Jim Popkin describes this Loch Ness monster of the drug trade: a sophisticated Kevlar-coated submarine built in the swampy jungles of Ecuador that would have been nearly impossible to detect.

Jim Popkin joins us here in Studio 3A.

Mr. JIM POPKIN (Writer, Wired Magazine): Thank you.

CONAN: And let's start with July 2, 2010. What happened on that day - the day that changed the dope - the drug smuggling game?

Mr. POPKIN: Well, the DEA had been looking for a long time and, as you said, Neal, hearing rumors about an actual fully-functioning submarine that might have been built near Colombia, Ecuador, and - but they considered it like Bigfoot. They thought maybe it exists, but we've seen proof of it yet.

On that day, about 150 Ecuadorian navy and police members were crashing through the jungle - it's a very remote area with mangrove forests - and they - I can't say they stumbled upon it, because they had pretty good intelligence, but they found, lying on its side at low tide, a 74-foot long fully-functioning submarine that has really changed the equation for interdiction of drugs in that area.

CONAN: Now, let's be precise. Those previous vessels were, well, sort of semi-submerged, just a little bit of the boat on top and used for one-way trips to crash land and bring hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds of cocaine in per trip. This is something on an entirely different scale.

Mr. POPKIN: It is, and I mean, not to take anything away from that construction and that engineering, that's been going on for more than 15 years, where they started with these cigarette boats that they would convert into semi-submersible vessels, which really means that they're almost completely submerged but they ride just under the waves, and part of the boat is visible. They have to, obviously, have an air supply.

CONAN: Yeah. But if it's wood, it's hard to pick up on radar.

Mr. POPKIN: It's very hard to pick up on radar, and the key thing is it can't dive. It just stays there. So if you happened by it or you're looking from high above, you can see some part of it coming out of the sea.

What is different here is that this is a submarine. It has a ballast system. It can go down. This one can only go to a depth of 62 feet, which is not very far and really doesn't give them much of a margin of error. However, if you need to go underwater, you can ride underwater for 18 hours at a clip, and it has a range of 6,800 nautical miles, which is, you know, pretty incredible.

CONAN: Or enough to go from that part of Ecuador to San Diego and back.

Mr. POPKIN: Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely.

CONAN: And the Kevlar coating, yeah, as you say, it's not titanium-hulled. It doesn't give you much submerging room, but it also makes it stealthy.

Mr. POPKIN: Absolutely. And I was fortunate enough to be able to look at the U.S. Navy's technical assessment of this submarine - a 70-page long white paper - and they had a kind of very begrudging respect for the engineering that went behind this, and they had never seen a Kevlar- and carbon-fiber-coated submarine. It's new. It, obviously, has a wooden hull, but there's very little metal in it, and it is very, very hard to track.

When it goes under, it's almost completely silent. It operates with the use underwater of 249 massive batteries, lead-acid batteries. And like an old World War II sub, when it goes under, you can barely hear it all, so it's really difficult to track at sea.

CONAN: And interesting, a lot of the parts seem to be Chinese.

Mr. POPKIN: A lot of the parts are Chinese. But this is really a hodgepodge. There are American parts. They seemed to be - it seems kind to be target of opportunity here. Where they can get the parts for the engines and other key elements, they take them from around the globe. But it is interesting, and the Navy makes note that in many cases that it's interesting that there are Chinese parts.

CONAN: So the suggestion, and no more than a suggestion, is these people may have had help in designing and building the submarine.

Mr. POPKIN: There is that suggestion. But the intelligence officials I talked to for the article think that it's probably made by a Colombian drug cartel using mostly local help. Now, they do think that someone came in to guide them on the design and then, ultimately, would have guided them on the use of this. You know, maybe someone with actual submarine training, because it would have been very difficult to operate this safely. Not that they particularly care about the safety of the crew, but to go up and back many times, which is what this sub is designed to do, would have been difficult.

CONAN: And it isn't cheap.

Mr. POPKIN: It cost approximately four to five million dollars to build, and it's not the only out there.

CONAN: Well, the key part, though, is its cargo capacity, nine tons.

Mr. POPKIN: Exactly. So nine tons of cocaine, let's say, has a street value in the U.S. of close to a quarter billion dollars. And that's why the cartels are willing to spend a year, devote all this labor and take the risk of bringing in all the parts - we haven't talk - this area of northwest Ecuador by Colombia is incredibly remote. And they built this without the use of electricity, bringing the parts in essentially by canoe-like boats several at a time for over a year. And they built it from scratch right there in the jungle.

So they - the cartels are willing to spend that kind of time and money because at the end of the day, you can ship $250 million worth of cocaine up to, let's say, Mexico, for transport into the U.S.

CONAN: Why not directly into the U.S.?

Mr. POPKIN: There's no evidence that they've done that yet. And the whole apparatus is set up so that the cocaine is made in Colombia, it goes up the Pacific Coast, it's offloaded secretly and at night in Mexico, picked up by boats and then brought across in the traditional ways across the borders of Mexico.

The U.S. intelligence agencies are very worried that now, with this submarine, you could have incursions, if you will, to the U.S., maybe even to Europe or Africa, just given the range and the potential of these vessels. But at this point, they only have evidence of them going as far as Mexico.

CONAN: And you said there is more than one.

Mr. POPKIN: There is. Just this past February, the Colombians found a similar submarine - this was about 100 feet long but similar capabilities - in Colombia, not that far. This whole region is, you know, marshy, jungle area. It's not that far from where the Ecuadorians found this. But now there are two, and the belief is if there are two that our government and these foreign governments have found, there are very likely are others out there.

And this is how it's developed. With the semi-submersibles, they started very humbly and they really grew. They became very much more sophisticated over the years and the thought is the same thing is true of the submarines.

CONAN: There were some sense of vindication from some of the people in the DEA that you talked to, that their are reports of these submarines finally proved out to be true.

Mr. POPKIN: Yeah. Yeah. You can imagine the scuttlebutt and the talk about this. If you didn't really know that much about this area and you heard that a drug organization was building a submarine in a jungle, it just sounds ridiculous on its face because of the engineering feat that has to go into this.

So there was some, kind of, playful banter in the U.S. embassy in Bogota over this over the years. And when it was discovered, the DEA did feel a real sense of vindication.

CONAN: And then the question becomes, so what do we do about it? If there have been two found, you have to suspect that there are others operating, that there is probably something like a small fleet of these submarines.

Mr. POPKIN: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And that's the - I guess, the concern is that it's almost like a little makeshift navy, if you will.

There are certain methods that U.S. and other foreign governments' intelligence agencies can take to try to detect them, using drones and sonar and radar. But in end of the day, I think, they acknowledge that they're going to have to continue to rely on good intelligence and that's what led to the capture of this sub.

There were a couple of tips that came in that got to the right people that enabled them to find the exact location. Because when they flew over this, and there's constantly plane traffic over these areas and satellite imagery, they saw nothing.

In fact, before the July 2nd successful raid, about a week prior to that, there was another raid. And they flew right over it and they right in the area, and they never saw a thing. It wasn't until they got boots on the ground and had very good intel about where to go that they stumbled upon some barrels in the jungle and then worked their way through and found this sub on its side.

CONAN: And as you said in your piece, they also found evidence of a camp for the workers who were assembling this vessel and that, what, breakfast was still warm.

Mr. POPKIN: Yeah, exactly. Everyone left when they heard this, essentially, this army coming in pretty loud. And they weren't able to arrest anyone directly connected, but they found evidence of at least 40 beds and, you know, quite a camp that was in operation.

CONAN: And how exactly do you assemble something like this without electricity?

Mr. POPKIN: Well, they think they probably had the use of some gas-fired generators. But, by and large, it was built by hand, kind of the old-fashion way, and done in place with some buildings right next to the estuaries there, which are tidal, so that obviously you don't want to build something that's too big and then have to try to move it. So it's - essentially, it's built in place, in sections, assembled and then it's ready to go.

CONAN: We're talking with Jim Popkin, a writer based here in Washington, D.C., who wrote an article for Wired magazine about the super sub that was found in the jungles of Ecuador ready to smuggle nine tons of cocaine. You're listening to TALK OF THE NATION from NPR News.

And anybody who's ever been to the Field Museum in Chicago knows there's a U-boat that was captured during the Second World War that resides in front. Where is this submarine today?

Mr. POPKIN: The sub is sitting now, it's propped up like a trophy, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in one of the main naval command centers there. And it's kind of protected, and it is treated almost like a trophy now because it was such an intelligence prize for the Ecuadorian navy.

CONAN: And is that where you got to see it?

Mr. POPKIN: It is. It is. I was allowed to go there and, I guess, the first journalist who saw it once it was taken out of the water and kind of cleaned up. And it was really exciting. I had read a lot about it and talked to a lot of investigators. But to stand next to it and see (unintelligible). It's almost twice as large as a city bus. It's just enormous and it was impressive to see.

CONAN: And, yes, sophisticated - some elements, though, the wheels, for example, a little primitive.

Mr. POPKIN: Yeah. It had this feel of like - reminded me of that movie "Brazil," it's a mixture of old and new at the same time. And you have an old go-kart steering wheels that help guide it, and yet you have this, you know, relatively sophisticated diesel/electric engine system. It has two screws, two propellers that drive it, and then this very modern Kevlar and carbon fiber exterior. So it really was a very clever mix of old and new.

CONAN: And as you, excuse me, the U-boat is at the Museum of Science and Industry, not at the Field Museum. I apologize for that. It was a long time since I saw that. There was a sideline in your article, the passionate devotees of submarines in this country who build some - amateurs on their own and were contemptuous of those earlier semi-submersibles, as you describe them, and took a look at the specs for this one and said, whoa.

Mr. POPKIN: Exactly. There's a group called PSUBS, and it stands for personal submarines. And it's a collection of about 250, mostly men, in the U.S. and all over the world, who build submarines of their own in their garages and on their driveways. And I thought it'd be important to go to them because you can talk to the Navy and naval experts, so they know about big professional, you know, rather more commercial construction of submarines.

I wanted to know how hard would it really be to do this, and what skills would it take. And as you say, Neal, they were quite contemptuous of the early versions, these semi-submersibles. But when they saw pictures and then I provided them with some of the details the Navy had provided, they were really, really impressed and thought that this was an incredible feat.

A New 'Doctor Who' Tries To Make Peace With Its Impatient Stateside Fans

It's a problem that might baffle even the intrepid Doctor Who: how to dissuade the show's devoted fans from downloading it illegally.

Those fans span generations ? from those who remember the cult-y British science fiction show as a rickety affair, with visible zippers in costumes and esoteric plotlines, to newer converts impressed by the slick, accessible and very funny new reboot starring Matt Smith as the eleventh incarnation of the Time Lord, who scoots around the space-time continuum by way of a bright blue police call box.

The BBC is tinkering with the space-time continuum itself. Starting with Saturday's premiere of the new season, the BBC will broadcast Doctor Who around the world on the same day for the very first time. Previously, the network favored British fans by airing the show there first.

Thirty-three-year-old Jefferson Eng is a suburban American fan. He lives right outside Philadelphia and he's watched Doctor Who faithfully since childhood.

"I can remember watching episodes on local Channel 17," he reminisces.

But these days, Eng admits, to occasionally watching episodes on his computer. Which is not strictly legal.

"I get it from the internet fairies," he confessed. "But I do also support watching it on BBC America."

Fans like Eng turned to the internet because of the BBC's practice of broadcasting its most wildly popular shows in the United Kingdom first. That's great for the Queen's subjects, but apparently unacceptable for impatient fans of Doctor Who, Torchwood and Top Gear who happen to live outside the realm. Rather than wait for broadcasts in their native lands, these fans took matters into their own hands.

As a result, Doctor Who is one of the most illegally downloaded shows in the world, according to TorrentFreak, a website based in the Netherlands that follows what people download ?often in violation of copyright. Doctor Who's illegal downloads don't hit the sensational numbers of a show like Lost, which got as many as a million downloads a week in its last season. But Doctor Who is easily in the top twenty, with as many as 200,000 illegal downloads the week new episodes air, many of those coming from the U.S. and Australia.

"The more rabid the fan base, the bigger the piracy issue," sighed Perry Simon, general manager of BBC America. (General Manager is British-speak for "President.")

Simon emphasized that fans are also getting their fix legally. He said Doctor Who is the third most popular show on iTunes, after Glee and Mad Men. But Simon added that BBC America has the unique problem of a disproportionately tech-savvy audience.

"Percentage-wise, BBC America is number one in Twitter users, of all networks, [and] number two in blog writers," he explained. He added that because BBC America's audience is so comfortable with digital media, they're also clever about using it to access the shows they want.

"We consider this a high-class problem," Simon said ruefully, adding that nonetheless, having such popular shows is thrilling.

But it's a problem with a pragmatic partial solution. Simon hopes that the new move of airing Doctor Who around the world all on the same day will keep those bloody internet fairies at bay.
